What are Vaginal Pimples?

Vaginal pimples are similar to face pimples or pimples anywhere else on the body. However, they are quite painful and stinging.

Look like small, skin colored or may be red, rounded lesions down there. May be single or many. Pimples may or may not be filled with pus.

Why do They Occur?

Chief cause why you get a pimple is clogging of a gland duct in the region.

The vaginal region is richly provided by different secretory glands. They include many like the Bartholin glands, that line the lower portion of vaginal canal and many oil secretory glands in the surrounding skin area. These glands keep the area well lubricated and moist.

When the duct of any of these gland gets clogged, the secretions start getting collected in the gland. Gradually, it swells up, and you see a pimple on the skin surface.

Symptoms

  • A rounded red colored bump
  • Single or more than one
  • Often painless
  • Slight itching may be there

A pimple is painless till it gets infected.

Genital Bump

    Vaginal Pimple
  • As moist and sweaty area is most favorable for bacteria to grow their colonies, pimples of this area frequently get infected. Then you get an infected bump.
  • This is red in color and painful.
  • It may show yellowish white pus in it. The surrounding area may also be red and slightly warm to touch.
  • If the infected material leaks out, infecting surrounding skin, more of such lesions may appear in the nearby by region.

Folliculitis

Besides this, you may have Folliculitis, which is a similar looking lesion.

This is infection of a hair follicle lying in the area. The condition is very painful. It resembles an infected pimple closely. The only difference being that, you essentially see a hair coming out from this lesion.

Infected hair follicles or pimples are clogged with bacteria, white blood cells and pus. The mixture of white blood cells, bacteria and pus is called plaque.

Vaginal Bumps During Periods

Vaginal bumps flare up during monthly periods and become very painful. This is because the area is more moist and has better grounds for the bacteria to grow there.

Most women neglect them, as they most often disappear after few days.

But it is recommended to get them diagnosed first. This is to rule out the possibility of other similar looking conditions, like herpes and other STDs.

Also, an ordinary vaginal pimple may sometimes complicate to form abscess. So it is advisable to visit the doctor at the earliest.

Herpes/ Syphilis/ Genital Warts Vs Pimples

There may be other conditions that produce similar looking lesions in the vaginal area. These include certain STD lesions and need to be ruled out, whenever you get a pimple like lesion there.

Genital Bump

Vaginal herpes

Herpes may be present in the form of tiny bumps that resemble pimples. However, on careful examination, they can be differentiated. They are in clusters, fluid filled and have a burning sensation, unlike pimples.

Read here about differentiating between benign pimples and common STD.

Syphilis may show as single or many big genital sores. They are usually oozing out infected fluid and tend to ulcerate. While pimples almost never ulcerate this way. If, however, you are sexually active, you need to see a doctor to rule out the presence of such conditions.

Genital warts are fleshy growths slightly raised above the skin surface. They appear around genitalia and are caused by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus. These are usually symptom less. May sometimes itch.

Another condition that may give you redness and scattered rashes is Dermatitis. This simply means that your skin down there is irritated by some allergen. This could be a new beauty product used, fabric of your pants, tampons, etc.

Treatment

After the diagnosis has been made, treatment and preventive measures may begin.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that moisture in the vaginal region promotes the growth of bacteria that reside in the surrounding area. Hence lack of daily cleaning indirectly contribute towards the evolution of vaginal pimples.

  • So keep the area clean and dry. Do not apply harsh soaps or detergents to this region. This is because, excessive washing alters the pH of the region, rendering it vulnerable to the growth of certain opportunistic fungus and bacteria.
  • Wear loose cotton panties only. Other fabrics do not soak the sweat produced in that area and hence aid in pimple formation.
  • Vaginal pimples are often initially treated by soaking with hot water. Many women pop up the pimples. This is wrong and may cause deep skin infection. This happens as we inject a few bacteria into the pimple while popping.
  • In case you are sure the pimples are infected, start using a topical antibiotic over them at the earliest. This would arrest their grow, fight the bugs and limit further spread of the infection.

Vaginal Boils

Vaginal boils are also somewhat similar to vaginal pimples but differ in that vaginal boils are more severe and painful than vaginal pimples. Mostly, they are bigger in size. Get them diagnosed properly by experienced dermatologist.

Do not use Benzoyl peroxide for treating vaginal pimples as this compound is irritating to the mucosal area. It is strongly advised not to use Benzoyl peroxide unless your dermatologist or doctor prescribes it.

Soaking with hot compress is helpful in treating vaginal pimples. Hot compresses helps reduce inflammation, irritation and pain.

Do not use any remedy unless it is diagnosed properly by a qualified dermatologist.

Hi, I’m 12 and I noticed a big bump on my vagina lip and it really hurts and the side are like puffed. How can I fix this? I haven’t had sex or anything like that. Any ideas?

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It’s likely to be an infected pimple. You need to keep the area clean. Avoid friction over the bump while walking.

Start applying an antibiotic ointment over it thrice daily. Bactroban may be used. The pimple may drain out pus by itself. Be careful to wipe away the pus cleanly, without infecting the surrounding skin area.

Hey, I’m 12 and I have this bump on my vagina. I’m not sure if its a pimple but it’s the color of my skin and it doesn’t itch. It’s just there. What should I do?

          2. Buddy M.D. Post author

Very likely to be a pimple. Don’t mess with it. Just let it be. It’s likely to regress on its own with time.

Meanwhile, avoid friction over it while walking.

Then after if my vagina still burns I will take a hot bath and it makes it feel better. But I am still a VIRGIN! Could you please help me! Do I have herpes?

These are likely to be vaginal pimples. Common in your age group.

To avoid them, you need to keep the area clean. Wash in daily with water while you bathe. Avoid hot water, soap or gel there. Just splashing with plain warm water is enough.

Dab dry and wear loose cotton underwears to keep the area moisture free all day.

Also, you need to take care that you’re eating healthy. Avoid junk food. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits to boost up your immune powers.

I was prescribed dicloxacillin for my vaginal pump. They were filled with pus. Two weeks later one has returned. I’m terrified. I’m going back to the doctor tomorrow . Do have any advice for me to relay back to my doctor.

      1. Buddy M.D. Post author

You may have to continue with your antibiotics for some time more.

It is common for pus filled pimples to spread. The infected pus gets in touch with the adjoining skin surface while it is drained. This way, infection spread.

Keep yourself clean and dry down there to prevent the infection from spreading further.

    2. Lee

Hi there, I am 15 and I just noticed I have a single red pimple on the side of my vagina it has seeped a small amount of puss. I don’t feel anything unless I touch it so I can’t determine what it is or how to treat it.

      1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Likely to be an infected pimple. Keep the region clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwears as far as possible.

You may start using a topical antibiotic ointment over this pimple. Mupirocin/ bactitracin or any other may be used twice daily for 3 to 5 days.

Very to be an infected pimple. You may try warm compress over it thrice daily .This will soften it and may help in draining it. Do not force drainage from the bump.

Also, start applying an antibiotic ointment over it. You may use mupirocin/ bactroban thrice daily. Avoid friction over the bump while walking.

There are tiny lubricating glands lining the vaginal canal. This is likely to be a clogged gland there. You need to do nothing, unless it pains. It’s likely to regress on its own with time.

      1. Buddy M.D. Post author

These area very likely to be a cluster of pimples. It’s, both, normal and common to have them at your age.

Avoiding squeezing them. This may infect these lesions, complicating them.

You may leave them as such. Keep the area clean by daily washing with ample water. Avoid using soap/ gel over them to avoid dryness. Wear lose underwears to limit moisture accumulating them. Moisture helps them grow.

Also, you need to eat healthy. Avoid all junk food and fried oily diets. Take plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your meals. Drink lots of water. Doing this would prevent pimples from erupting in future.

I think I may have an infection in a pimple I popped. A mixture of blood and clear body liquid is steadily coming out with gentle pressure.

I am a virgin. What are some home remedies if this is an infection?

    1. Rebecca

Well, I’m not a virgin, and this pimple like bump appeared around my crotch. It’s red and it seems irritated because I popped it. I don’t know what it is or how to treat it.

      1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Apply mupirocin ointment over it, twice daily for a week.

If the pimple doesn’t improve, you may see a doctor to rule out the presence of STD.

  2. Kenyan Herbalist

My girlfriend also has the same problem. She has a painful pimple that sometimes oozes blood. This is just after her periods. We had unprotected sex during her periods. Could it be the reason?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Vaginal pimples tend to flare up during menstrual periods. And at that time, they are more prone to trauma.

Intercourse may injure such bumps due to friction and hence may cause mild oozing of blood.

My Daughter is 12. She says she has a lot of white spots in the inner lip of the vagina and a pimple just under. She hasn’t started her period, but has pubic hair since last 2 – 3 years. I think she may be starting soon.

But obviously she hasn’t had sex yet. So it can not be an STD. She is too embarrassed to see a doctor and even turns red talking abut it to me. Help!

    1. Beth

      Hey Jane,
How wonderful that your daughter is comfortable enough to talk to you about it! Changes in hormones (which are a big part of puberty) can have a big impact on the presence of genital pimples. Just let her know its normal and to use good hygiene.

If you think she needs to see a doctor and she is too embarrassed, consider telling her how you felt the first time you saw the gynecologist. Talk about how it’s scary but it’s really not that bad.

You can also describe the different types of things/instruments the doctor may do or use (stirrups, speculum, etc.). The best way to reduce fear is to educate. I get these types of questions all the time on my website. It’s very normal.

    2. Natalia Gonzalez

Hi, I’m 15. I haven’t had any sex and I have these little like pimples around my pubic hair and little bumps around my lip in the darkish brown area. I run, so it is hard for me to keep it dry. Could that be why I have these things?

      1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Moisture accumulating in the groin region is one of the causes that may give you pimples or bumps.

Bathe yourself or wash the area with water after the running session. Always wear cotton underwear, which are able to absorb extra moisture in the groin.

Avoid friction over the bumps during movements. You may apply baby powder over the bumps on the skin (not the mucosa).

  4. Cyh

Any suggestions how to keep this warm and moist area dry? Are shower-to-shower powders O.K. or gold bond?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Wear clothes which allow ample aeration in the area. You may have to wear tight clothes when outside home, but when at home, consider wearing loose cotton underwear.

If you feel like putting some powder, it is alright. Just assure that the product is hypoallergenic like baby powders etc.

      1. Jay 24 W

How would the pimple go away? What can we do to get rid of it? Because my girlfriend has the same thing and she’s scared to tell her mother, so that’s why I’m looking up her situation.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

A small pimple, which is not infected, would go away on its own. You just need to keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwear only.

If the pimple is big or painful, apply mupirocin over it twice daily for 3 to days.

  5. Jow

I have a kind of swollen area located right at the opening of my vagina. There is a small bump located right inside. It does not hurt, it’s not sore and there’s no discoloration or pus.

Can you please tell me what this is, I am very worried.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Your lesion has a lot to do with examination. It may be a simple glandular cyst, but STDs need to be ruled out. It is advisable to visit a doctor.

However, it appears to be a cystic swelling of vagina. Cysts commonly develop around the vaginal opening. There are many glands which secrete lubricating fluids. When they get blocked, a cyst is formed. Such a swelling is usually painless and resolve itself with time.

In cases where it gets infected, antibiotics are required.

      1. Isabell Walton

I just want to know how do you get rid of the bumps and how do you get it from hurting so much.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

You get bumps due to clogging of the oil glands in the pubic area. These glands become very active during the teen years of life.

To avoid them, you need to prevent them from being clogged. For that keep your genitals clean and dry. Read here about washing the vagina.

Also, wear loose cotton underwear, which prevent moisture from being trapped down there.

Pain in any of the pimples need attention. It could be due to some infection. Apply mupirocin ointment twice a day over the painful pimples.

How often should we women get a pap done?

Also, I get like one or two bumps during or before starting my period, sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t. They eventually go away but this is new to me. Can this be because I’m over weight?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is common to have vaginal bumps around menses. If the bumps go away on their own with periods, you need not worry. Just keep the area clean and dry. Never squeeze or pop these bumps. This may infect them and complicate the situation.

It is unlikely that your weight is linked with these bumps.

You may read here on how often should the pap smear be done.

I have a pimple looking thing on the inside of my vagina lip. It’s not bothering me, but I’m uncomfortable knowing it’s there? Is this do to sweat and other than visiting a doctor what else can I do?

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It’s likely to be a pimple. Pimples arise due to clogging of lubricating glands by dirt or tissue debris.

Wash your genitals daily with clean water while bathing. Dry dab it and wear loose cotton underwear to keep the area well ventilated.

Don’t pop the pimple. It is likely that it would subside on its own in 3 to 5 days.

It didn’t hurt or anything. I’m just a little concerned of what this may be?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is very common to have vaginal bumps or pimples around menses. The cause is hormonal.

Just let it be. It will go by itself. However, if it hurts or gives out some discharge, medical intervention would be required.

Remember not to squeeze or scratch this bump. This would infect it.

Hi, I have recently discovered some pimple like bumps on my vagina as well. It started with one but a couple have started showing around it as well. They do not have pus or anything as I have tried to pop them.

I did notice a bump near my anus but it is not a blister and it’s been there for a while. It is not near the anus entry; it’s just more near the side. It’s hard and I do shave close to there; so could it be from that?

The area is already healed now but I just really wanna know if what had happened was normal. I’m a little worried since I also had unprotected sex a few days ago before it appeared. Please help.

It is difficult to say what it was. Sounds like you had a pimple or a bump which got infected. Infected swellings get filled with pus and blood. Since you have already drained all the pus, the lesion is likely to heal by itself. If you feel its not getting better, you may have to take some antibiotics.

Though this does not sound like a STD, it would be better to be watchful. If you find any rash, warty structure, ulcer or any other lesion, you may go for a check up.

I had unprotected sex 2 month ago. Now I have a little bump-like pimple near my vagina. When I touch, it hurts. I pressed out the pus and blood out. The next day, the pus is still there.

I’m worried, is it STD? Or is it just a pimple? For your information I just had my period recently.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is likely to be an infected vaginal pimple. Since the pus is still there, you may start putting some topical antibiotic cream over it. Mupirocin antibiotic cream can be used for this purpose. The pimple should heal in a weeks time.

If it does not get well, it would be better to get it examined by a doctor.

I’ve noticed that I get a small clear filled pimple when my vagina is shaved. Only on and around but not inside. And I feel like the times that I did pop it and the clear fluid came out, the next day there would be more that would appear. The five years I didn’t shave not one appeared. Now that I have shaved they are appearing again and I’m scared it might be an STD even though I haven’t been sexually active since the last breakout which was 5yrs. ago. Can you help me and let me no if this is preventive. And how can I be sure it’s not herpes or an STD.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Herpes lesions are usually in clusters and have a tendency to ulcerate. They flare up with time. Your pimples sound to be due to shaving only.

It is common to get such pimples during shaving. This is because we do irritate the area when we shave. Read here about preventing pimples while shaving.

I noticed a bump on the surface of my vagina, near to the pelvis next to the hip. When I apply pressure, it hurts. But otherwise it doesn’t bother me. I can move it between my fingers and its a tad bit hard the size of a pea. It has no pus and it is barely red in color.

I have had a bartholin cyst before, but it is not at all like that. I would like your advice on what it could be.

  14. Elma

I have had bumps come up every now and then around my vagina. I have an ointment called bactroban that I used for bumps on my back when I caught on fire.

Can I put that on these bumps, will it help?

  15. Lei

I have this same thing, a pimple like thing around the lip of my vagina. It is so painful. Whenever I pee or even when I wash it or whenever there’s a contact with water, it pains.

What’s the best remedy for this? I even took mefenamic to improve the pain, but nothing helps.

  16. Alittleworried

I have these pimples on both sides of the inside of my vagina. They last for few days until finally they get really tender and then pop on their own.

Then I give them a squeeze and a pure white, round, hard “head” comes out. I have been getting them nonstop for about 2 years now.

I have the Mirena IUD and I am wondering if maybe that is the cause of the pimples?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Mirena IUD may be a factor causing you those pimples. This IUD is a hormone based device. Hormonal changes do lead to acne formation.

Are you having acne on other parts of the body too?

You may consider going for some other form of contraception.

      1. Alittleworried

Yes, I have also been getting it on my face as well, when I have never had acne issues before.

  17. Taylor

I have a red hard bump that hurts. I thinks it’s on my labia where I pee. I have no idea what it is or how to treat. Please help me. It has no pus.

  18. Camryn

I’m 12 years old, about to be 13. I have pubic hair and right underneath my hair I noticed a pimple. The top of the pimple is white, like a normal pimple on your face. It hurts to touch it.

I just want to make sure this is nothing bad. And how to prevent another pimple?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is absolutely normal to have pimples of this sort in your age group. Just take care of the pimples. Do warm compresses on a regular basis to heal it quickly.

To prevent further pimples from occurring, eat healthy. Take a lot of water. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Also, avoid fried fatty stuff.

    2. Buddy M.D. Post author

No there is nothing bad. Just let it be as such. Do not pop or squeeze it. You may do warm compresses and alleviate pain, if any.

  19. Gina

My vagina itches lately. I have had sex in like 4 months. I have bumps around my vagina that looks like pimples. They don’t hurt or anything. What could this be?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It may be some kind of infection. You need to rule out conditions like genital herpes and chlamydia (simple yeast infection).

Though you have not mentioned any pain, redness or swelling in the area, only itching can also be a symptom of infection.

It would be good to visit a doctor and get these infective causes ruled out.

If not infection, the pimples can be due to some allergy (from some douche or undergarment) or from shaving. Such pimples usually subside with time.

  20. Crissa

I’m 24 years old and I’m virgin. I have noticed a pimple on my vagina. Sometimes it hurts and itches. I don’t know why it appeared, as I maintain proper hygiene. I use feminine wash and panty liner.

I’m too shy to consult the doctor. I also feel shy to share my problem with my friends and family. I simply kept it secret. But now I’m worried. How to get over this? Sometimes I have in my mind not to get married because of this matter because I’m shy. Please help me.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is very normal to have such pimples at this age. Many girls have it, so don’t feel odd about it.

Try not to use any feminine wash for this. Overcleaning the area would make it dry and cause itching. All you need is a plain water wash twice a day for your genital area.

Read about how to clean the vagina.

  21. Timmy

Hi, I have this pimple that started hurting yesterday. Then today, it started hurting like crazy. There’s a small red dot (that looks like a pimple) on a bump that hurts as well.

I also cleaned it twice a day, once this morning and once a while ago. When I felt it, the bump spread and the red dot is still there that hurts badly. I’ve had vaginal pimples before but not like this.

  22. Annie

Hello, a few days ago I noticed a small lump just on the inside of my vagina. It’s painless and like a small hard pea.

    What could this be?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

This is likely to be a cyst formed due to blockage of any vaginal gland. The vagina is provided with plenty of glands near the opening, which secrete lubricating fluids. Blockage of the duct of any such gland leads to cyst formation.

Nothing needs to be done. It will subside on its own with time. You may try warm compresses for quicker recovery. However, if it pains, gets bigger or red, you need to go to a doctor.

  23. Tina

I have some big bumps on my vagina. It’s on the surface, they itch sometimes.

First they start as a pimple and when I pop them they just get bigger and harder. I need help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is normal to have vaginal pimples. You shouldn’t pop or squeeze them. Fiddling with them in any way with your hands usually infects them. This makes them grow big with pus collected inside these bumps.

Read here about taking care of these pimples.

  24. Laura

I’m 20, I just found a small bump/lump on the outside of my vagina. Like just outside the hole. It’s skin colored and doesn’t hurt or itch.

I’m freaking out that it could be herpes or warts.

  25. Tesha

I have bumps on the top and sides of my vagina; they don’t hurt. I do pop them; they have blood and pus. After bothering them, they itch a little but I put cream on them. They seem to be formed underneath my skin; they won’t go away. It’s like when one leaves, here comes another.

I have shaved with an electric shaver but I use scissors because the electric ones give me more bumps. But when using scissors I still break out. I get a lot of ingrown hairs. I haven’t had sex in forever. I’m still worried though.

      1. Susan

I have a pimple right after my period. It doesn’t hurt but the bump has white on it. What could it be?

  26. Martha

Hi, I’m 14 and I’ve been noticing these pus filled bumps on my vagina. They secrete blood and pus and are painful when touched.

This has been happening for maybe 2 or 3 years. They usually happen at random times; one day there’s like 2 of them, then there’s no more for like a month.

I haven’t told my mom or doctor and I am concerned that it may be something serious. What should I do?

  27. Margret

I had a hard painless pea-sized bump right outside the opening of my vagina for years. Recently it got really swollen in that area and it was very tender for a couple of days.

I took hot baths daily and it bust on its own. A bunch of yellow and white pus came out. After slightly squeezing while in the tub, a hard white round almost the size of a pea “head” came out.

I’m pretty sure it was a barbarian cysts and turned into an abscess. My question is, if it burst on its own and the poison has subsided, do I still need to see a Dr for antibiotics?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Just keep the area clean and dry. You may not require any further treatment if there are no further symptoms.

If, however, you feel any pain, discomfort, fever, redness or swelling, further management would be required. The presence of any of these symptoms would mean that the cyst has not drained completely.

  28. Olivia

I am a married woman since 12 years. I have a 10 year old daughter.

I have a pimple inside, down left side of my vagina since 4 years. There is no pain, but when I was in contact with my husband, at that time I felt little pain downwards. Once I visited to doctor, she told not to worry, but it is same since four years. I am worried.

Kindly advice how to get rid of this pimple. It looks to be filled with pus. I can’t see by my self. My husband saw this. Please help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Try doing warm compress for this pimple twice a day on a regular basis. This will gradually soften the pimple and may slowly lead to its drainage.

  29. Kinda Worried

Hi, I’m 18 years old. When I take a shower and began to clean my vagina I have been noticing a painful feeling. Then I usually have to stop washing so I can not get as clean down there as I want too.

But anyways after I stop cleaning down there my vagina has a painful and itching feeling when I get out of the shower. And also when I go to pee it burns a little. (But this is only after I shower).

Today I decided that I wanted to look down there to see if I saw anything around my vagina. I saw very tiny bumps and I have no idea what it is. I really need help because I am worried since this has been going on for a while. Also I don’t want to go see a doctor. Please help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Do you have any other symptom, like vaginal discharge etc? Are you sexually active?

If you have no other symptom besides this, there is nothing to worry. It is normal for these areas to become over sensitive during teenage. Read here all about cleaning the vaginal area.

After you clean your vagina, apply some bland, non perfumed lubricant over it, like bland coconut oil or KY gel. Keep your nails trimmed.

      1. Kinda Worried

There is no discharge, the only other thing is the seat of my underwear sometimes are a little moist but that’s it.

        And yes I’m sexually active.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

That’s alright. The moistness may be due to normal vaginal secretions.

Commonly one has increased sex drive during these years. There is increased vascularity of the vaginal region, causing it to be wet most of the time.

Wear loose cotton underwear to keep the area clean and dry. Remember not to scratch or pop any of the lesions there. This may infect them and aggravate the problem.

  30. Bobbie

I have small bumps in my pubic hair. Sometimes they itch, however they aren’t painful and they don’t contain any pus or blood. They also last for months at a time.

I stopped shaving my pubic hair for a while and they still come back. I don’t have the means to go to the doctor right now, so I’m trying to get a better idea of what these are and try to treat it at home first.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Your bumps are probably due to shaving of the area. Read here in detail about bumps caused by shaving.

You need to take care of these bumps. Keep the area clean and well aerated. Wear loose cotton undergarment that allow enough aeration. Tight clothes cause friction and may flare up these lesions.

You may apply any emollient (cream) over these pimples before bedtime. Do not scratch or try to squeeze the lesions. This may infect them and aggravate the problem.

These bumps should gradually go away on their own in a few days.

  31. Martha

Please help me. There’s this medium bump on my labium majora that sort of looks like an ant bite but is not exactly red.

It started out as a pimple that looked reddish but then turned into a bump that isn’t red at all. It’s been there for about 2 weeks. At first, it didn’t even hurt a bit. So I ignored it. But then, I got worried since it wouldn’t go away so I took a look at it.

I noticed this very tiny hole on top of it that looked like it could contain pus, since it was a little bit gray. But take note, the only thing that was gray was the hole, nothing else. Not even the skin around it.

So I squeezed it. Then, a small amount of liquid green pus came out. But the bump was still as big as it was before. And when I touch it, it hurts like a minor bruise.

I’m 14 and I’m still a virgin. I’m really worried about this. I don’t know what it could possibly be.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Looks like a localized skin infection at the affected point. Mostly, such lesions are caused by pulled hair strands in the region. This may be due to improper shaving of the area or otherwise.

Be very clear about what is to be done. You need to completely drain out the pus inside. If incompletely drained, the lesion will recur, it will not go completely.

The drainage needs to be done with complete asepsis, so you may go to a doctor for it.

You may drain it at home with complete hygiene. Do warm compress to soften it. Then drain it. Do not force drainage, it should not pain you. Let the pus come out comfortably. Then apply a topical antibiotic ointment (Mupirocin or bactroban) over it. Do this twice a day.

Complete drainage at home can take around 3 to 4 days.

      Some precautions-

    2. Trim your nail before draining.
    3. Don’t force the drainage at any point.
    4. Be careful not to touch your hands, contaminated with pus, anywhere else. This may spread the infection.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Boils have a tendency to spread. They are basically staph infections of the skin. You need antibiotic treatment. Apply some topical antibacterial cream over it twice a day for a week.

If you note any fever, oral antibiotics may be needed.

I haven’t got my period but I had red pimple looking things, not in my vagina, but kind of under my stomach, a little lower may be. They were just in that area and went away in a little over a week. But they were really itchy and red. Once I stopped scratching, they went away. I have never got them before though and haven’t got any since. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend and I haven’t got my period in a month and 2 weeks. Could I have an STD or just be pregnant. I have a bump or maybe a pimple on my vaginal area and I don’t know what to do about it. I have had this before but they soon went away and didn’t come back, but after my period this month one came up and it really hurts. Sometimes it hurts to walk and when I shower I have to be very gentle because of the pain. I know it’s not a STD because I am still a virgin and tonight it popped on its own and blood, pus and a clear liquid came oozing out. What do I do because I’m scared to talk to my mom about this but I really need to see a doctor about this because I am really worried something could be wrong. PLEASE HELP!

Try warm compress over it. This would help in quicker healing.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

The pimple may have sebum inside it or, it may be infected and filled with pus.

Sebum is usually uniformly spread inside a pimple. The whole lesion would appear tense.

However, pus has a tendency to get collected at the top or side of the cystic swelling. This collection is the head of the pimple from which it can be drained.

I’m 20 years old. About a week ago I noticed a painful, semi small white head pimple thing on the outside of my vaginal lip. I popped it and blood and pus came out and it was still tender until a couple days ago. Yesterday I itched it and now it looks and feels like a sore. Do you think it was a pimple and I infected it by itching it? It’s hard to keep the area dry 24/7 so I am wondering if it is taking a little longer to go away because of the moisture or is it something else? I don’t want to go to the doctor if this is the first time it’s happened and there is only one.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Well, it’s quite likely that you have infected it with your hands. Keep it clean. apply a topical antibiotic like mupirocin over the pimple twice a day for a week. It would gradually go away.

Hi, I’m on my period and just a few days ago I realized I had a pimple around the bikini line (I never had it before). So I went to soak with warm water and pop out and yellowish pus came out and now there is a little blood on the part where the pus came out and seems to be a little deep. I think the pus is all out but there is still pimple there just that it got much smaller and less painful. How should I treat with it?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

You need to apply some topical antibiotic, like mupirocin (or bactroban) over this pimple in your vaginal region. This is to prevent it from further infections, as it is like an open wound now. Put the antibiotic thrice a day for 4 to 5 days. Your pimple should get alright.

Hello, I’m 14 and I have been having pains down there in me and last night I put my finger in to see if I felt anything and I felt like a big bump and some small ones. I’m really starting to worry because when I have been going to the bathroom to pee it hurts a lot and now it has begin to hurt when I walk. I am concerned and haven’t told anybody. What should I do?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is suggested that you get yourself examined by a doctor at the earliest. Your lesion requires examination for a diagnosis.

Since it is painful, it is likely to be an infected bump in the vaginal area. You may need some antibiotics. If the bump is too big, your doctor might consider draining it.

Don’t delay, infections down there have a tendency to spread fast.

      1. Diane

Today I went go the hospital and they told me I have a really bad yeast infection due to all the bumps I had in me and that if I would have delayed it longer, it would be worse than it is now.

Hi, yesterday I noticed a bump between my leg and my bikini line. It’s a little swollen now and hurts a little. It doesn’t have a head formed on it or anything. I took a warm bath to see if that would help. It’s a little red around the area now. I’ve read countless stuff over what it could be. I just want to know how to treat it. I’m not sexually active so I know it can be a std or anything and I am not on my period. I’m 16 and don’t want to tell my mom and I definitely don’t want to go the doctor. I was thinking maybe I should leave it alone and it will go away.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It doesn’t sound like a pimple. Such a bump may be due to some localized irritation on those spots as in shaving the area, mosquito bite, fabric irritation, and so on.

Since you can see that the bump has no head, it is unlikely that there is any pus inside it.

    2. Try applying any emollient over the bump. Simple calamine lotion would also do.
    3. Do not squeeze or try to pop the bump. This would infect it and complicate the situation.
    4. Wear soft cotton garments only for a few days. Synthetic fabrics may irritate the skin.
    5. Your bump is likely to go on its own in a few days.

Sometimes my vagina gets rather sore and itchy. It does not hurt to urinate, however. I went to my gyne about it a few months ago and she thought it could be due to vaginal dryness. I also used some Canesten cream in case it was a simple yeast infection. It has not been sore in a while though, a little itchy but that could be due to shaving. However, recently I have noticed a small bump down near the entrance of the vagina. It does not hurt to touch, it’s just this little bump. I’m a virgin, so it couldn’t be an STD. I’m just wondering what this small bump could be due to? Also, was my obgyn right about pain and itchiness being due to dryness? Like I said, it couldn’t be an STD, so what else could it be?

  47. SAM

I am a little worried about a bump around my vagina (more near the labia majora). I tried to pop it and a little blood came out, but it did seem to help reduce the size, however I just noticed a bump kind of near the same area but more in the crease close to the bottom of my butt. I need to see a obgyn but I just wanted to get a little more information before I do. Could these just be pimples due to sweat/tight close or could it be something more serious like herpes? They don’t really hurt unless touched. Please help!!

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

They sound more like pimples due to sweat or tight clothes. Herpes lesions are usually in clusters and flare up to ulcerate.

However, since your pimples have blood it them, they look infected and you require antibiotic treatment for it.

Keep the area clean and dry and start applying a topical antibiotic cream like mupirocin over it. Use it twice a day for a week. Read more about infected vaginal pimples.

I’m 14. I have pimple like bumps on the top of my vagina and outer lips on the right side. I’m a virgin. It itches and its been there for a couple of days. I’m starting to get a rash on my inner thigh and my skin on the sides of my vagina is flaking. What do I do? Help!

  50. Lina

I have a zit like thing on my pussy and it’s so itchy. I am a virgin. And it looks a little dark. Am I going to die? I’m only 14 and oh, I’m too scared to tell anyone. I’ve had this problem before and they go away in like 2 weeks.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

This one will also go away in a week or two.

Since it is itchy, looks like your pimple has got infected. You need to keep the area clean and dry. Read more about home care of pimples.

Also, start applying a topical antibiotic cream, like mupirocin, over the pimple twice a day. Continue this for a week.

I noticed this bump/pimple on my vagina and so I popped it, it cleared up and was gone within the next day. However, I then noticed two more bumps, not right by it but still on my vagina. Why are these continuing to form? Is it an STD? I have had sex before but it was always protected. Please help, I’m very worried.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is possible that you’ve spread the infection while popping it.

Pimples on vagina needs to be managed differently. Never pop or squeeze them. Keep the area clean and dry.

Over the pimple try warm compress twice daily. This will help reducing it gradually and finally disappear cleanly. Also, you may start using mupirocin ointment over the affected pimples after each warm wash.

  52. Samantha

I’ve noticed a small pimple on the outside of my vagina. I cannot see it, but can feel it. Can it be a grown in hair? I recently got tested for HIV, hepatitis etc. and it was negative.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It may be an ingrown hair, however, it is more likely to be a pimple. There are small glands lubricating the vaginal area. These are especially active in your age group. The duct of one of them may get blocked forming a swelling called pimple.

Hi, I’m 32. I have small bumps on my vagina. It can’t be a STD, they are not painful but doesn’t want to go away and it feels like they are getting bigger. They are white in color.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

These look like small pus filled acne. That is why they have a white look. Since you don’t have any pain, antibiotics are not required.

All you require is to keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton undergarments only. Try warm compresses over the pimples twice daily. This will soften them and help them regress over a week’s time.

Read more in detail about the cause and management of such white pimples on the vagina.

A little while ago, I noticed a small white dot around the top of my vagina, not inside of it but around the pubic hairs. Unfortunately, I started picking at it, and now it appears to be pimple-like and painful. I’m a virgin as well as a teen, and I’m completely uncomfortable with going to see a doctor of any sort, or even talk to my mom about it, but I’m a little worried. Any idea’s?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Nothing to worry, may be a pimple containing white sebum like fluid in it.

You need to keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton undergarments. Also, apply an antibiotic ointment, like mupirocin, over it twice a day for a week. The lesion will gradually get alright.

I recently discovered some red bumps near or below my vaginal hole area going on to my bottom cheek. Most of them are within the hair. It doesn’t itch really just maybe when they first came up and they don’t hurt unless I try to squeeze them. I squeezed one and just a little blood came out. I tried to squeeze another but it just hurt. I had protected sex and recently got tested for STDs and it came back negative. I currently had a yeast infection before my previous period. Could it be because of my period? Why they are there? The tight clothing? I live in the Caribbean so I’m not sure what it could be? Could you tell me please. I’m worried.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Pimples grow in moist places of our body where there is trapped sweat and sebum. Whatever be the cause, your menses or tight clothing, the remedy is the same. Keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton undergarments only. Wash the area with clean water twice a day. Don’t use any soap or gel for that.

Read in detail about the cause of eruption and management of genital zits.

Thank you…. do you know how long it will take to clear up after my my period? Can fisicort or advantan be used on it?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It should get alright in 7 to 10 days. Fisicort and advantan are steroid based creams. They are not recommended for use in the genital area unless very necessary.

You may use fisicort with caution, if there is any discomfort like itching, redness etc.

  58. ceehara

Um it’s me again….you told me within 7 to 10 days it will clear up. It shows no sign of going down…. Can’t burst and itches occasionally. They now started to look more like wart. At first they looked as if they were going down and now even when I scratch them, they get swollen again. Please help. What this is or what to do?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Simple pimples usually heal within a week. Since they are many (in clusters), it is suggested to get yourself examined by a doctor.

Small itchy pimples present in clusters are likely to be an infection, which may spread further.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Yes, they may. There are many people who are allergic to latex and develop small red bumps in the area after use. Such bumps are allergic in nature and subside by themselves as you stop using that particular condom.

  59. ceehara

So I have nothing to worry about? It just may be an infection? Because I was worried that it might be hpv or something of that sort but I used protection and stuff. So I’m not sure.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

An examination of the area is imperative to make a diagnosis. Since your pimples are giving symptoms, it is better not to delay and go to a gyne, even though you used protection.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Start applying an antibiotic (mupirocin/ bactroban) over those lesions twice a day for a week.

After I had sex, I felt that my vagina is sore and before I went to sleep, I still felt the pain. The next day, I checked it and I saw that I have a bump in the lower part of my vagina. Is this normal? or I have herpes or STDs?

      1. Anonymous

I’m only 17 and my boyfriend and I are both only having sex with each other.
My question is.. could I develop a disease called herpes if we use a non powdered surgical latex gloves as a substitute to condom? And if I wont, how can I treat the pimple on my vagina? It hurts especially when I sit but it doesn’t itch much. It just stings when sitting or when it comes in contact with water. Please help. I haven’t told this to anyone because I’m scared 🙁

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

The latex glove is alright if it is tight enough.

It’s a question of loyalty, how much can you trust each other.

Herpes is a common disease among people who have more than one sexual partners. The virus sheds itself from infected surfaces and gets transferred to the partner.

The mode of spread is not just vaginal sex, it may be oral sex or even kissing.

You treat your pimple as a normal pimple that has got infected. Apply warm compress over it twice a day. After each warm compress, apply bactroban antibiotic cream. Do this for 4 to 5 days.

If it doesn’t heal, or you find more of such lesions down there, visit your doctor at the earliest to rule out STDs.

Hi, I have pimples on one side of my vagina lip and the other once on my labia some of them are turning white and the itch so bad sometimes I won’t even sleep because of the itching. Please help it’s been a year since I last had sex and I used protection.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Too many pimples may be due to tight clothing around your genitals, unhealthy diet or stress.

It is recommended that you wash the area daily with plain water, and keep it dry throughout the day.

Wear loose cotton undergarments, particularly at night times. Pimples would gradually subside, as you take precautions to prevent pimples.

  62. Cristina

Hi, I have been getting this for more then 2 years now. I thought nothing of if but I don’t know if it’s normal and I’m kind of shy to go to the doctors. I have been getting a pimple like thing on the side of my vagina it always happens on the side, never more than one, before I even get it or notice it I feel like it’s coming a little pain then I touch and I feel a bump. It can last between 1 / 2 weeks. I get them every month or every second month. It is a little painful, any ideas? Please help me. Is this normal?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is normal to get such pimples in your teens and early twenties. What is your age group?

Just take care of it like a pimple on any other place of the body. Wear loose cotton based undergarments, particularly at night times. Keep the area clean and dry.

To relieve pain, you can do warm compress over the pimple, followed by an application of mupirocin ointment.

Hi, I am 18 years old and I have recently found what appears to be one red blister on the top of my Labia majora. I hurts when I touch it or when my clothes rub against it. It’s the size of a facial pimple. Extra info: I have never had intercourse or oral sex before. I also do not shave in the area where the blister is placed. Please tell me what this could be and how should I treat it?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Appears to be a pimple, just as you have them on your face or elsewhere.

Since it is red, it is inflamed and likely to be infected. The commonest cause why it gets infected is when we squeeze it or touch it repeatedly with our hands. Any such manipulations imparts bacteria from our hands to the pimple.

You need to take care of the pimple now. Keep the area clean and dry. Do warm compress over it twice a day. This would soften the skin over the pimple and drain pus from it, if any. Also, apply mupirocin antibiotic ointment over it, twice daily for 3 to 4 days.

Read more on taking care of infected pimples.

A while back I found a small bump near genital, I found out later I was pregnant. And recently there are a few more bumps. They don’t hurt or itch. They aren’t red, just scared to ask doctor. Kind of look like small tiny skin tags. Please help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Take precaution not to pop, squeeze or hurt the pimples in any way. Such acts would only infect them and complicate further.

Just keep the area clean and dry. Pimples should decrease gradually.

If they stay, or increase in size or number, you need to see your gyne and rule out any possibility of STD. This is important since you are pregnant. Infections may affect your pregnancy and the baby.

Hi, I’m 22 and have been with the same guy for almost a year now. I just recently got off my period, like maybe two days ago, and I noticed a hard, pea sized lump which appears to be white, directly under the opening of my vagina (there’s only one bump). It is pretty painful, especially when my underwear or pants rub on it. I haven’t told anyone yet as I am embarrassed, but it’s really bothersome. I don’t have medical to get it checked but I will if it comes to that. The first day it was sore, the second day it was painful and a lump, the only thing I’ve tried is a heating pad and ice pack but it doesn’t seem to be getting smaller. Please help! I am terrified!!

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Looks like a pimple that has got infected.

Do warm compress over it twice a day, once in the morning and one at bed time. After each warm compress, apply mupirocin ointment over it. (Read more)

This ointment is a topical antibiotic, easily available over the counter.

Hi! I have little bumps on the upper part of my vagina and it has little pubic hair growing in it. Its itchy sometimes and looks dry. Also before and after I get my period I get vaginal discharge that has an odor. What could it be and is there anything I can do for the smell to go away? I feel really awkward about it.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

There’s nothing to worry about the bumps. They are just pimples, and sound not infected from your description.

Just keep the area moisture free. Wear loose cotton based undergarments only. Drink lots of water. Avoid fried fatty stuff, too much of spices.

The bumps would go away gradually.

As for the smell, read here about vaginal odor.

I have noticed today pimples inside my vagina. I am getting this every month before 2 weeks of my periods. It disappears after my period. It’s hurting a lot while walking and also I am feeling uncomfortable. Why these are appearing for every month? Is it dangerous?

  70. scared!

Okay, so I found a bump/ pimple on the right side. Not on my vagina but by the underwear line. I popped it and pus and blood came out. It has become smaller but hasn’t gone away. It doesn’t hurt as much as it did before. I’m scared though.. any help. Please?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It would be better to apply some topical antibiotic (like bactroban, available over the counter) over it for 3 to 4 days.

Avoid friction over it. If possible, don’t wear your underwear till it gets healed. Keep the area clean and dry.

      1. Mary

I had a red bump on my panty line next to my vagina, as well looked like a whitehead. I couldn’t help but pop it. Blood and a whitehead came out. I had these before around the same areas as well as on the side of the anus. I’m scared of herpes but it’s always one red bump. Sometimes it looks like a pimple and sometimes it’s a red bump. Do herpes come as a single bump and bleed if popped?

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Unlikely to be herpes. Herpes comes more commonly as blisters. However, if you are sexually active, you may see a gyne.

These are likely to be infected pimples. Pimples tend to reoccur over nearby areas. This happens when the infected fluid inside them touches the normal skin surface of the groin and infects it.

Please help! I’m 13 years old. And I found a bump on my vagina. It’s hurts while I walk and sit. I’m still a virgin and I’m scared.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Likely to be a pulled hair or an infected pimple.

Apply warm compress over it twice a day. This will help in softening it and draining pus from inside if any. Remember, not to force drainage from the bump.

Put a topical antibiotic (mupirocin) over it at bed time for a week.

I have been getting red bumps on my vulva. It feels like a pimple but there no pus and I have some discomfort. I don’t know what this is, if some one could help me that would be great.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Pimples can be without pus. Try keeping the area clean and dry. You may put some baby powder over it to aid in dryness. The lesions should start healing if they are mere pimples.

If not, you need to be checked up. What is your age? Are you sexually active?

      1. Amy

I’m 29. And it’s been about three months since I had sex. The two I just had I did get them to pop they did have pus in them. This has been going on for about 6 month to a year I never had these before.

          1. Amy

Well, I don’t get them every month. I get them every 2 or 3 months and I only have one but this time I had two and both had pus in them.

          2. Buddy M.D. Post author

Wash clean the area where you have the pimples with plain water twice a day. After each cleaning, apply mupirocin (bactroban) ointment over the pimples. Do this for a week.

Recurrence of pimples implies that the infection stays there. This may be via pus. So, when pus oozes out, be meticulous in cleaning the pimples and the adjoining area gently with soft cotton balls and lukewarm water. You may use a mild antiseptic (like povidone-iodine) for cleaning.

    Hi I’m 16 & a virgin.
I have been having pimples on my butt cheeks for about a year.it occurs on both sides.these pimples come in a group on both sides.it might be because after I wash my backside I don’t dry it properly before wearing my panties back on hence encouraging the growth.these pimples have left many scars and also even wounds.thus I just started using alcohol wipes those that they sell in the pharmacy and then I rub some Vaseline on those.is it safe to use Vaseline?
Secondly,i have recently saw something like a single pimple and its surrounding skin inflamed on my vagina left lip.so my left vagina left lip around the pimple only is inflamed. What exactly is it? Should I use any anti-bacterial creams?

  75. anonymous

Hi I’m 25. I have been suffering with these pimples for about 18 months or so. They are mostly on the rim of both lips but I can get them inside of both lips as well. Sometimes, there is just one, sometimes maybe spread out. Sometimes they are small pimples, sometimes hard lumps. They do get sore after friction my thighs rub together a lot. They can get quite painful and tender. I went to see the nurse for a check up and she was unsure what they were and my gp said the same. They did not think they were herpes. I have only had one with pus but I think it became infected. I think it may be because I have a fairly high amount of discharge which is normal for me and I am also on the contraceptive pill.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Well, you may get pimples when on contraceptive pills. This is common.

If you cannot stop taking the pills, just take general care of the pimples. Keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton undergarments most of the time.

Watch your diet. Avoid fried fatty stuff, which predispose to pimple formation. Take plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables in your meals. Drink lots of water.

I’m 19 and haven’t been sexually active for over five months now, about a year ago I had a hole form on the top of my crack, it will swell up and get very painful so I pop it with a needle and let it drain. For about the last 2 months I have had white discharge and a odor but it’s not a strong odor. Two days ago I was looking at the spot on my crack and I noticed on the inside of my vagina I have two bumps, they look like white ticks you find on animals. I can’t afford to go to a doctor right now can someone help me out please.

This may be an infection. You need to be physically examined by a doctor.

Try applying any topical antibiotic (mupirocin/ bactroban) over it twice daily. This ointment is available over the counter in most of the stores.

It would be better to go to a doctor for examination.

  77. Brianna

Okay, so my fiancé and I were in bed kind of fooling around when I realized that there was a bump on the outer lip of my vagina and I am freaked out. It wasn’t there yesterday or even a few hours ago and I’m wondering what it could be. It’s not colored and it only hurts if you press on it. Could this be a cyst? There’s nothing coming out of it (no blood or pus) and am wondering if I should be concerned or if it is simply natural and easy to handle.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

You may observe it for a day or two. If its just a pimple, it would gradually subside. You just need to keep the area clean and dry.

Don’t pop or squeeze it with your fingers. This would infect it.

If it doesn’t improve, or you find more of similar lesions erupting, you need to for a physical exam to a doctor.

  78. Phoebe

Hi, I’m 16 yrs and I’ve been noticing bumps and pimples around my vagina, where pubic hair grows. They are painful and as they get smaller in size I feel less pain. The last time I had sex was 1 year ago and we used a condom. I’m worried, it is happening for the 2nd or 3rd time now and I’m very shy to see a doctor. Is this normal?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is normal to get some bumps or pimples on the labia during this age group. They are usually small and gradually subside on their own. No intervention is required, expect that you keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton undergarments most of the time.

Avoid using any cosmetic product to clean down there. Plain water washing on a daily basis, during bathing, is enough.

  79. mp

I’m young and need some help, you said you can prevent these, right? Well what could make them worse with a daily routine like school then basketball almost everyday of the week.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

A schedule like yours is likely to produce a lot of sweat and sebum in the genital region. Be particular about washing it twice daily. Also, wear loose cotton undergarments to keep the area dry and well ventilated.

I am a parent of a daughter. She is 14 years old. She started getting periods two years back. But a new problem also started- fever and cold every 10 to 15 day of the month. What to do for the problem? Kindly help. Please, I need to get my daughter healthy and good.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

How high or low are her fevers? Any other associated symptoms, like stomach ache etc.?

  83. ashley

My daughter is 14 years old and just recently told me that she’s been getting infected bumps on the outer part of the vagina, and ever so often she will get really big blister sort of thing. She is not sexually active so that cannot be an std or anything in that nature. She said the bumps are pop-able and white hard pus comes out of it with a distinct smell. Her vagina is all red around the outside, kind of like a rash. I’m concerned.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is a common problem of these years. Pimples on or around the vagina are similar to acnes one gets on the face or elsewhere on the body. Her glands are getting active during these years.

All she needs to do is daily washing of the area with clear water and keeping it dry all day. Ask her to wear loose cotton underwear and avoid using any cosmetic product down there.

Of any pimple occurs, don’t pop or squeeze it. This will spread the infection and result in more of such pimples.

Manage a single pimple by doing warm compress over it twice daily. If it is red or painful and looks infective, apply mupirocin (bactroban) over it for 3 to 5 days.

I have a pimple on my outside lay vagina. It started as a small one but grows. It’s painful when you touch. When I try to squeeze nothing come out. I have receiving them more often and they just heal themselves, is there any infection or causes of this.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Hi, a few days ago I noticed a little bump on the outer part of my vagina. It got bigger but it doesn’t hurt, it’s just red and I think I see an ingrown hair inside but I’m not sure if it’s that. I’m scared to pop it because I don’t want it to get infected. I highly doubt it’s an STD because I’ve only had sex with one person and he doesn’t have them. I only see him twice a year. Please help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is good that you didn’t pop or squeeze it. This would only infect the bump.

Try doing warm compress over the bump twice a day. This will gradually soften its surface in 2 or 3 days.

Once softened, the bump could be drained by gently applying pressure over it.

Draining needs to be gradual and gentle, in a week’s time.

I have a big bump on the lip by the vagina hole. It doesn’t hurt, well it didn’t until I popped it. I was wondering if you know what this is. I haven’t had sex in over 2 years.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

What came out of the bump when you popped it? Is it still painful or red?

  90. K

I wasn’t too smart and decided to look this up after I tried something on my own. I saw “do not use benzoyl peroxide.” I used “hydrogen peroxide.” I don’t know if they are the same thing? I wish I had read this before! But the peroxide did open up the pimple and the pus all went onto the cotton pad I used, and it was pretty solid. It stopped the pain though. I wasn’t trying to open it up I was trying to clean it. I may have done something I wasn’t supposed to. It’s kind of on the outer labia but on the inner part of it, if that makes sense. Should I be worried that I used peroxide?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It’s alright. Most of these chemicals are irritants and should be avoided.

However, there is nothing to worry after one time use of the chemical. Just avoid making it a habit. It may be bad in the long run for your skin down there.

Hi, I’m 16 and I have a bump which seems kind of swollen and I went to the doctors and got antibiotics. It’s been about 3 days and it has only gotten slightly better and my mother is trying to make me go to the hospital but I really don’t want to. It’s kind of red and it hurts when I sit up straight and when I walk. And It’s kind of attached to my thigh but towards the vagina. I am on my period and my period was so late this time. That’s because last month I had to take a really strong morning after pill after unprotected sex, which was towards the end of my cycle. Could the contraceptive have been a cause of this? Will it get better when I take these antibiotics?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It’s likely to improve as you continue taking those antibiotics. It may take a week before it gets better.

Does the bump has visible pus in it. If yes, it needs to be drained. You may try warm compress at home to soften the skin over the bump. This may help in draining it.

The pill is unlikely to be the cause.

I’m just wondering if anyone has ever suggested that the cause of pimples and infections on the lip of a vagina could also be more simple than some obvious reasons for it? Think about it. Women pass gas too. And it’s been scientifically proven that microscopic fecal matter has been found on places like bed sheets and chairs and couches! And when one passes gas in the middle of the night, I, as a woman, have found that the gas can sometimes pass up through the vagina lips. Yes, that’s gross.
An example of what fecal can cause: I’ve seen cases of mothers that don’t change their babies diaper right away after the baby did a poop mess and the child would get a rash on their bum! It wouldn’t take that long for a rash to come on. Just an hour and then the skin may get irritated especially if one is sensitive.
Since it’s common for women to shave down there, it would only make sense to try and shave inside the camel toe area which could cause a left behind whisker to stab the lip. I’ve experienced this more than once. And if fecal matter can get on the vagina lips, most likely, it’s going to cause an infection as it sets inside the tiny puncture wound.
Of course, I understand that there are things that get passed through sex too. I just get annoyed that everyone is ready to tag STD on a person all the time, every time someone has a concern. Just a thought and most certainly would make one want to keep a pack of wipes by their bed side.

Back in 2013, I went to get by the doctors cause when I had started my period I began having these very painful like pimples. And this was the very first time this had happened to me! The pimples like things came about when I wore this pad, and when I told the Doctor she said “You have Herpes” but I wasn’t too sure because my boyfriend doesn’t have herpes and neither do I until she claimed I do. (When I informed other people about the clinic, people gave me non-positive opinions about that area). I was prescribed 2 type of pills and an gel-like ointment to put on directly and it disappeared. But every once in a while, when I start my period I get those bumps. 3 days ago I started my period, the following second day during the night time when I went to change, the bumps were there again. I’m not sure what to do. I feel as though it could be like an irritation from the type of pads I use? I’m afraid if it is true that the Doctor was correct that I do have herpes.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Try changing your pad first. Pads with cotton lining are available in the market. Try them.

Herpes lesions are different than vaginal pimples. They are usually in clusters and tend to ulcerate with time. Read more on herpes lesions.

      1. Anonymous

I checked the bumps not that long ago, and I did nothing to irritate them and I tried my best to make it clean when I’m on my period, and the bumps have amounted up to 25 small bumps. They’re close by each other and they are beginning to get itchy. What should I do? I’m afraid to go to the Doctors again because I’m afraid of what the results will be.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

If the number of bumps increase in number, it is likely to be an infection that is spreading.

It would be better to go to a doctor for examination. This may be an STD.

  94. LB

Hi, I am fourteen, I have never kissed a guy much less had sex so I’m not worried about STDs or anything like that, but about one week ago I found this small bump/pimple thing on the outside of my vagina where my pubic hair grows. My period starts in four days and it will be my third one so far. I’ve had pubic hair for about a year now but I don’t shave it, just trim it. I’ve also had noticeable discharge in the days since I found this pimple. I’m not sure if I should be worried or go see a doctor. Please help.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Let us know, is the pimple painful or itchy? Is the area around it red or swollen?

Can you describe the nature of the vaginal discharge you have, its color, odor and consistency.

      1. LB

It is not very painful or itchy, only when you touch it. The area around it is not red or swollen either. The discharge is white/clear, and does not have much of a odor. It hasn’t gotten any bigger or more painful, if anything it’s gotten smaller and less painful.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

There is nothing to worry. This appears to be a simple genital acne.

As you get acne anywhere else on the body in teenage, you may get it over the genital area too. Managing acne needs an insight about why they erupt. Read above in details about the occurrence of pimples and managing them at home.

As for the discharge, this appears to be a normal vaginal discharge for this age. Around 17 years, one may notice an increase in vaginal secretions. This is to keep the area well lubricated and moist.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

No, there is no way simple vaginal pimples interfere with pregnancy.

However, STDs may prevent you from getting pregnant.

Hi. I’m 13 years old and I’ve noticed a hard pencil head sized pimple on my labia majora. I have not begun shaving yet so it could not be an ingrown hair. I am also a virgin so it couldn’t be an STD. I’ve researched pictures of a vaginal pimple on the labia majora and found one that looks like mine. I just want to make sure it’s a pimple and get the treatment I should use to rid it! I have not popped it and it is completely painless. I think I noticed it about a month ago. I’m just a little annoyed that it won’t go away and I was hoping you could help me solve this problem! I’m quite embarrassed and I do not want to go to a Gynecologist. I want it gone as soon as possible!

    1. Sam

Also, I hope you understand this since I’m not the expert when it comes to the parts of the vagina but when I say the labia I don’t mean the noticeable outside part, I mean when you fold that back (I know this is kind of graphic and I’m describing it the best I can!) Like the inside? Is that the lip? or just the inside of the Labia? That’s what I mean! It’s on the Labia but not on the outside noticeable part where pubic hair is.

    2. Buddy M.D. Post author

This does sound like a pimple.

Try warm compress over it twice or thrice a day. The skin over it would gradually soften and drain eventually in 2 to 3 days.

  96. melissa

What types of creams should I use to heal a very painful bump/pimple outside my vagina (where the hair usually grows). I’ve been compressing a warm cloth on my affected area, but it appears to get bigger and red. It seems to be an in grown hair.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Since it is painful and is growing in size, the bump is likely to be infected.

You need to apply a topical antibiotic, like mupirocin (bactroban) over it. Apply the ointment thrice a day for 3 to 5 days, till the bump subsides.

Hello, every year since I were a child I suffer from pimples in vagina and butt, also near the mouth, bad breath, smelly farts. This happens once and more every year, every time I go to see a doctor they say I have a bacteria in my stomach and gives me Supplin. What can I do to stop this situation from happening every year? Thanks.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Eat healthy and freshly prepared food only. You need to take 6 servings of fresh fruts and vegetables on a daily basis.

As you do so, your immunity and gut flora would improve and you’ll get lesser of such bugs.

Also, include home made curd in at least two meals in a day. This would restore gut flora as well as pH in your vaginal area. You’ll get lesser of bugs there.

I have a red bubble down where I pee. I don’t know what it is, but it hurts not a lot but a little. It does not itch but it’s red and I don’t know if it’s a pimple or not. I am scared. I don’t know if am suppose to pinch it or not?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Do not pinch or pop the pimple. Since it is red, it is inflamed and likely to be infected.

Start applying a topical antibiotic, like mupirocin, over the pimple. Apply it twice a day for a week.

Keep your groin area clean and dry.

Hi! I am 15 years old. I am a virgin and I take a bath twice a day. I always make sure to clean that little area as always but when am about to have my period. I just started having those giant pimples. It scared me. I don’t ever talk about with anyone because am embarrassed. I just started popping them one day. It leaves those dark marks in the area. I am scared I’ll never get married. Please help me. I use acne (neutrogena) it helps my face but not that other area.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

      Do not use neutrogena there.

For this area, you just need to wash it daily with plain water, no soap or gel. Then dab dry it. Wear loose cotton underwear only, to avoid friction there. This fabric is absorbent, and will not let excess of sweat to get accumulated there.

If the pimples are big, or look infected, you may apply mupirocin ointment over them, twice daily for 5 days.

  100. Julie

I’ve had a few vaginal pimples before that I’ve never worried about, and I’ve never had any sexual contact before. So I’m also not worried about STDs, but I’m currently on my period now and I just found a very very painful, firm, reddish, raised bump just inside my labia majora, a bit bigger than a pin head. I’m very concerned that it might be a boil, and if it is, I wouldn’t feel very comfortable telling an adult or doctor about this. Should I just be sure to clean my vagina properly and mostly ignore the bump for the next few days?

    1. Jaya

Hi, I had the same issues and I was shy to visit GP with this issue. But the bumps started to spread all over my Vagina lips inside and outside. At one point, I cannot tolerate the pain and it start to itch. So, I visited the doctor she took the herpes test (even I told I never had sex). The results is fine there is no infection or herpes. She gave me antibiotic tablets (it is available only with doctor’s prescription). After two weeks, I feel much better. No itchiness or pain in my Vaginal lips. In my experience, seeking advice with GP is the best solution.

  101. Julie

I might also add that this bump is painful when stimulated. Without being pressed or touched, I hardly even feel it. But if I press on it some it becomes really painful.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

You may start applying mupirocin ointment over it twice daily.

First do a warm compress over the boil. This would soften it. Then apply the medication.

I had sex 1 week ago. Now I am having a watery discharge and some pimples around my vagina, even 1 or 2 thought not visible but I can feel it in the inner side and it’s itchy. I didn’t know if it’s because of shaving, but watery discharge it almost did wet my pants. I am 20 yr old and have only one partner.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

This is likely to be an infection. You need to see a gyne for examination. Appropriate antibiotics would then be given to you.

Meanwhile, keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwear to avoid friction there.

      Abstain from sex till treated.

I have small skin colored warts on the entrance of my vagina that doesn’t hurt or itch. I have had them a year and a couple of months now and I haven’t had sex in the last five months. My vagina gives off a clear fluid that turns yellow or a very light brown after a while but it doesn’t smell fishy or stink. It has a slight scent. Do I have an infection or disease? Should I be worried?

I have five skin colored warts on my vagina. Two on the left side and three on the right side. I had sex a couple of days ago and after the sexual intercourse my vagina burnt for a minute or less. Two day after having sex the warts burst on their own and oozed blood. When it burst on its own it didn’t hurt or it didn’t give off any smelly odor. Do I have an infection or disease?

If the pimple on the vagina is painful or red, you may apply a topical antibiotic cream over it. Mupirocin (bactroban) may be used.

I have pimple like bumps inside the lip of my vagina. I don’t know what to do. It hurts when I’m washing it. Before it occurred, I got fever then red rashes appeared in my body and hands then while washing my vagina I felt that there was a small bump with a cut cause it hurts. I have had unprotected sex a few times and during that time period I noticed a small pimple light yellow kind of looking at the side on my vagina wall (inside) before getting to my minor lips. But it quickly went away. I tried to pop it but nothing happened and it really hurt. I no longer have it yet when I had un protected sex with him again it came back but again like last time it went away. I have only had it twice now and yes we have had unprotected sex again but it hasn’t come back? Should I be worried? I am 17 years old and I’ve been with my boyfriend for over a year now.

Hi doctor, I’m 21 y.o girl and having some problems. On my vaginal lips there are two hard bumps on the left and one on the right and they feel extremely itchy. The area around my vagina and thigh is also itchy but got no bumps on it. I searched for quite some time and most of them say that the bumps were caused by contact during sexual intercourse. I am a virgin. I think that this is due to hygiene issue but when a bump appear on the back of my ear too I start to feel worried. Could you please give me insights on what these bumps are and how to get rid of them because one on my ear is painful and ones on my labia major feel very itchy. I plan on meeting the doctor tomorrow but can’t stop feeling scared and thinking of the worst. Thanks in advance.

This isn’t a question, but an observation. I’ve found out that what I get every month around my menses are called sebaceous cysts. They’re sweat gland cysts. Bottom line, if you get a “deep pimple” that hurts like all get out, make sure you wear breathable undies. From what I’ve read, close fitting, thick jersey knits are actually unhealthy to wear and easily trap bacteria. I’ve taken to making my own and buying very breathable fabric. I find it’s good to change your undies often to keep things fresh. It’s actually a good idea to wear sleep underwear and day underwear.

I’d also avoid mainstream pads and tampons, and go for menses cups and cloth, washable pads. Both are tons more sanitary and cut down on waste. You don’t get odor problems with a good cloth pad. Many also have a waterpoof layer sewn in, and the wings have solid snaps.

A manual bidet or sanitary wipe is a good idea to use. Don’t overwash via soap, but do keep yourself fresh down there after toilet each use. Once you start, you won’t go back.

I’m a young woman who has been sexually active to a certain extent with my boyfriend. We are both each others first in this field and when I say to a certain extent, we have only done oral. Well today I saw a red bump just on the inside of my labia and though it was an ingrown hair so I took the tweezers to it and no hair came out, it was as though I had popped a pimple. A yellow white liquid came out, just as it would have if it was a zit on my face. The first I have noticed it was today and the last time I was intimate with my boyfriend was 6 days prior to this. Do I have an std?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

This is likely to be a simple pimple. You may start applying mupirocin ointment over it to treat the infection in it. If not treated, the infection may spread to give rise to more of such pimples.

Keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwears only.

I am on my period and I noticed a bump near my vagina closer to my leg. After reading some question and your replies I still would like to know that if it is just a pimple, are they usually a bit more dense than the pimples that you would get on your face? Mine is kind of hard and I want to know if this is something that will go away by itself with regular cleaning or if I need to go to my doctor for it.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It may be an ingrown hair or a pimple.

      Pimples can be hard.

You need to keep the area clean and dry. Avoid friction over the lesion.

Such pimples go on their own with time. Treatment is required only if they get infected.

Hi! I’m 22 years old and didn’t have sex since beginning of january. Week and a bit ago while I was sleeping, my vaginal area was really itchy so unconsciously I scratched it. Few days later, the front right side of my labia minora was swollen and hard. (prob about 1.5cm). I tried to ice it but didn’t do anything and today I found 2 white dots that looks like pimple was on my labia minora where it is swollen. How could I tell for sure it’s pimple for sure? It’s hurting a lot now.

I have a bump in my vaginal area. I have got tested so I know that it’s not a disease or anything. It hurts really bad. Very, very painful, it stands out from the rest of my private area. It flares up and gets really shiny. These bumps usually go away in a few days but I just want to know, what could be the problem? Are they pimples? I read an article about vaginal pimples, so I was thinking maybe it was that. Are there any more explanations?

Hi! I have a question so I had a pimple like thing in the upper part of my vagina and it wasn’t painful or anything. I am a little overweight but this has never happened. Since I was scared at the moment I did pop it and it just had blood but it didn’t hurt at all. What could be the cause of this? Also sometimes my vaginal area is a bit itchy, but I always think it’s probably cause of shaving. I don’t know please help if possible.

Do you have any discharge from the vagina, whitish or yellow? Check your underwear for this.

Hi. I’m 17 and sexually active but I know the person I’m with don’t have any type of disease or anything. But sometimes it’s like once in a while I randomly get a zit so I usually treat them with antibiotics but like is there a way I could prevent from having them. I go to the gym a lot and I always wear panty liners. Do you think the liners could be the reason and sometimes when after my period I get irritated down there too. I just wanna know how I can prevent having the pimple of zit it don’t hurt or nothing it just feels like I have a bump and it’s uncomfortable. It’s not big but still uncomfortable. So is it okay to even wear liners all the time. I don’t even like bumps in my face so it’s just worse and gets me worried when I have one down there. Please help.

Keep the region down there well ventilated throughout the day. You’re likely to get less of pimples.

I have a large pimple like thing that has hair follicles in it but I am not sure it is necessarily coming out of a hair follicle. I noticed it about three days ago and pulled the hair out then took a shower. I felt it again today and it was significantly bigger and more painful. I accidentally popped it trying to take the hair out (that usually works for my other pimples elsewhere) and it exploded with pus. I cleaned it up as best I could but didn’t have time to take a shower. What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get even worse? Where did it come from?
I am an 18 year old virgin btw

Keep the area clean down there. Wash it with ample water while bathing. No soaps or gels to be used.

Dab dry and apply a topical antibiotic cream over it thrice daily. Mupirocin/ bacitracin may be used.

Is it something to worry about?
Can having vaginal pimples every month cause any problem in conceiving?

Hi,I’m 18 years old,I had a pimple my skin color at the side entrance of my vagina,I didn’t pay it much mind but then about five more started growing. It doesn’t hurt or anything but it’s always there and won’t go away.

Yes I am sexually active,I’m not sure if they have puss because they are really small but they feel rough to touch.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Since they’re not disturbing you, may observe them for a few more days. If they still stay, you need to be seen by a gyne. May be some infection.

I used to have bumps sometimes after shaving 3 or 4 but they go away on their own but last week I was itching and I couldn’t resist scratching. The itching stopped eventually but now I have bumps about 47. I just shaved so Yes I counted them lol because they are now very visible to me. Some small some slightly bigger, mostly on my bikini line. I applied an after shave balm for men and when I read it’s not advisable I stopped and I applied shea butter. I want to know the cause, what it actually is and how to prevent/treat it

Are you sexually active? Any discharge from the vagina?

From the description provided till now, these appear to be due to irritation. The irritant may be shaving or some beauty product used there. It may be some new lotion, after shave or gel tried.

An anti histaminic cream may be applied there. Or else, you may use 1% hydrocortisone ointment.

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Try applying the above mentioned ointments, twice daily. Avoid rubbing over the affected area.

Let us know if it improves.

Hi I’m 26yr I have one single water type bump near my left side of my private area .it hurts when I walk .I haven’t been sexually active.Any suggestions?

May be a blister. If there are no no symptoms, you may leave it as such. It would regress on its own with time.

    Hi,
I have had protected sex…in 2005 and in 2013 i noticed a pimple like thing in groin area. I showed it to 5 gynacs but they said it is not std. I have pimples on back , face and sometimes nearby breast. When i pop the pimple near groin area it gives out same kind of fluid as the pimple on face. Stil I want to know is it only a pimple. Also we had shifted to an area that is dry where i stopped getting these now that I am in humid region I am getting these again.

From your description, these appear to be pimples. However, for an exact diagnosis, an physical exam would be required.

Hi, I have a reddish bump (size is as big as a whole black pepper) above my clitoris. It doesn’t hurt until you touch it. The feeling is like you are touching a pimple. I’ve massage it with warm water but it doesn’t remove. I’ve noticed it 2 days ago. Any advice what it is or should I be worried? What is the possible cause and treatment for this? Thanks.

Very likely to be a pimple. You may leave it as such. It would regress on its own with time.

Avoid rubbing over it while moving.

Any kind of sexual activity you’re involved in? Any new soap or gel used there? Do you shave down there?

      1. Some random kid

I haven’t had any sexual activity since im a 12 year old virgin and i haven’t gotten any new soapor gel and i haven’t shaved in 8 months

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Keep the area clean while washing daily with ample water. Avoid using soaps or gels there. These are not required, as the vaginal area cleans itself.

Dab dry with a clean towel. Start applying a topical antibiotic ointment over all the bumps you have .You may use mupirocin/ bacitracin. These are available over the counter.

Eat healthy, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid having fried fatty food stuff or junk food. If possible, include curd/ yogurt in your daily diet. This would help maintaining a healthy pH down there.

I’m 19 I’ve given birth via episiotomy about 3months ago and have healed nicely scar is not sore at all buy I have recently noticed small white pimple like bumps not alot of it around my vagina not on the lip part so much more around the scar and the actual hole I know its not a sexually transmitted thing like stis and whatnot I’ve only been with my baby’s father for the past year it gets really itchy sometimes and sometimes burns and stings and hurts a little when I touch it I’ve been using Vaseline and baby jelly and it helps with itchiness and burning do you have any idea what it may be or what caused it maybe hormone change?

  139. Julie

It.. I’m 19 yrs old.. I’m not sexual active I have little pimples all over my virgin and also inside they ain’t painful. . I need help please

Do you have pimples elsewhere over your body, like your face, neck, back or armpits? How big are they?

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Likely to be due to hormonal surges at this age.

Keep the region clean and dry. Avoid using any soap or gel for cleansing. These may alter the pH of the region. Just plain water is enough. Wear loose cotton lowers.

Eat healthy. Avoid all junk food and fatty food stuff. Include more of fruits and veggies in your diet.

Pimples are likely to reduce with time. If not, you may need a hormonal treatment.

Hello! So this thing started in janurary when i got a bump in my labia minora. I got infected but still went away on its on. After that my finger got an infection so i went on antibiotics and after that my vagina has been red and someties itchy (that has lasted for 2-3 months) and now i got another bump and i went to show it to a gynecologist and they said it was folliculitis? and gave me the same antibiotics that had i think caused the redness and itching and then i also got some pills for a yeast infection. It’s been a day since the cure stopped and the bump is now normal skin color and not itchy or red or painful. The redness tho is still there and doesen’t seem to go away. Using bepanthen helps but it also makes it more itchy. What should i do? My gynecologist was sure that after the antibiotics and yeast infection pills i’d be alright but i’m not? I’m only 14 so i’m scared that’s it’s something dangerous even tho my mom and the gynecologist said that it isn’t .
