Treatment would depend upon the cause. So its important for us to first investigate the problem and find out the cause of these cysts.

We need a little more information:

  • Are these lumps painful?
  • Do they grow big or rupture at some point?
  • What kind of fluid do they seem to contain?

Feel free to answer them in the comments below.

Common Causes of Multiple Cysts

Familial Multiple Lipomatosis

This is a condition where small cysts made up of fatty (adipose) tissue keep erupting all over the body. They can occur anywhere – over the trunk, neck, back. However, they rarely affect the hands.

These cysts are not harmful in any way. They do not grow. They are not cancerous. The only treatment possible to stop their growth is a healthier lifestyle, that includes-

  • Avoid eating fatty food.
  • Eat more of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks for some time.
  • Do any form of light exercises daily.
  • Cleanse your body everybody with any mild soap.

Slowly, you may find a reduction in their occurrence and finally get rid of them totally.

Ganglion Cysts

This is another possibility. Here cystic swellings erupt over inflamed joints. For example, over the wrist or elbow. As a joint becomes inflamed, fluid accumulates around it. This expresses out itself as a cyst.

You may need to go to a doctor for examination of these lesions. Only after actual examination, an exact diagnosis would be possible.

Neurofibromatosis

There’s a fancy name for the condition, Von Reckilinghausen’s Disease. The condition is characterized by the presence of multiple firm, painless nodular lumps all over the body.

Here, fibrous tissues get accumulated around the nerves of the body, giving rise to these benign tumors. They may occur over the back, neck, belly, trunk and other regions.

These growths are not cancerous, however, there are chances that they gradually turn cancerous. As such, they look ugly and may reduce self esteem.

The disease process may also affect the bones and eyes. Early diagnosis and management are recommended.

Multiple Lipomas

A collection of fatty cells which lies just under the skin may be called a lipoma. It’s very commonly seen.

If you’ve gained considerable amount of weight in a short period, and you’ve developed a few soft, movable, rounded swellings any where over your body, these are likely to be lipomas.

Getting rid of them is simple. Loose weight and revert back to a healthier eating schedule.

Multiple Fibromas

Have you noticed some people have firm bumps just under their skin at various places? They may be present over arms, forearms, legs or else where. These may be fibromas.

These bumps give no symptom at all. You may not be able to see them, unless they’re quite big. They can be felt when touched with fingers.

Fibromas are benign tumors that are composed chiefly of fibrous tissue. It may also have other components of connective tissue, depending upon its location.

My boyfriend is 39 yrs old. In the 4 1/2 yrs we have been together he has had lumps under his skin. Over the years more have appeared.

Is this something we should worry about? They don’t seem to hurt. I touch them when I’m rubbing his back.

Since they are symptomless, they sound harmless. Still, it is advisable to get them examined and know what they are.

The lumps may just be accumulated fat, as mentioned above. Or it may be a part of some disease condition like neurofibromatosis etc.

It would be better to know their nature and get them treated.

I have lost 90 lbs from the spring of 2015 until present 8/27/18. I weighted 245 when I started and now weight 155. I am 5’2″, so now I am considered overweight no longer obese. The weight was lost due to loss of taste and smell, have regained sense of taste but not smell. Also went thru a 6 month Healthy Life Style program, teaching about healthy foods, how to shop and cook and what to eat. I really have not done a lot of exercises. I am a bad migrainer and was seen in a headache clinic for 15 years until they finally got they right medicines for me to take daily to prevent them, but during the period of trial and error, some of the meds would make me dizzy, unsteady and things like that so I fell down a lot. The falls injured my knees. I had partial knee replacement surgery 11/16 and am now having problems with the area not replaced. I have had 2 rounds of PT and walked in the water at a gym for many months. But as I said no real exercise program. I now have small bumps just under my skin almost all over my body. My family doctor and I think it is just fat deposits but we are no specialist so that is the problems. They were first on the top side of my lower arms, now they are/ or have spread all over my body. They are not painful. I have a lot of saggy, extra skin from the weight loss especally in my upper arm area and belly. And that chicken skin look to skin in those areas. According to medical information I should weigh 135, but I am a 67 year old woman and doubt I could ever get back down to that. But I am continuing to lose weight, mostly due to how I eat or don’t eat. Most of the time I only eat 2 meals a day. And I do not eat sweets and snacks. The only sweets I eat or frozen juice bars. About 3 or so month ago, I got really nauseated when I thought of eating breakfast ( up until then my eating habits were great). My cereal got mushy because I had to stop eating and do something and when I got back it was mushy and really horrible. I threw it out and after that I would get nauseated every time I thought of breakfast. I would end up eating whole wheat ritz crackers with sprite sometime during the day and then a small dinner, some nights no dinner at all. I guess you could say I went into a fasting mode. That is when I really started losing weight again real fast. Once I lose it, I don’t gain it back. I really don’t know how much more I will lose as I am still losing about a pound every week or two. Have gone from a size 24 to a 14 and they are getting baggy. That is why we think it may be fat pocket under the skin but we don’t know, is there anyway I can find out what it is?

Losing weight would be good, anyway, until you’re eating healthy and not compromising with your health. Assure that you’re taking enough fruits and vegetable salads to meet the daily vitamin and mineral requirements, which are essential in your age group. Malnutrition could make you weak and prone to infections.

These lumps are very likely to be fatty lipomas. However, diagnosis requires an actual physical exam.

Such lumps are likely to be lipomas, which are packets of fatty tissue collected under the skin. In places where these packets press upon a nerve, the lipoma is painful to touch.
You may read above about its management.

There are other possibilities also. Need to know if you have any other associated symptom like low grade fever, joint pain etc.

It is good that you don’t have any constitutional symptoms. Such symptoms are usually present in autoimmune disorders.

These may be simple fatty lumps. However, an examination by a doctor is essential to confirm the diagnosis.

Fat tends to get deposited in a lumpy form, in people who have excess of it.

These lumps are usually harmless, not cancerous and may stay as such for years.

The only way to avoid them is to have a healthier lifestyles, better eating habits and more of physical activities.

Include more of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Avoid fried fatty food stuffs, as far as possible.

It is a good idea to visit a dietitian and work out a dietary chart for yourself.

After a few days it also grew up in my elbows, I thought that my left elbow was just the last to get a lump. I didn’t expect that it will hurt and its started to grow and I had the lump on my right elbow. and the lump on my chin is now starting and it’s very painful. My lumps are soft except for my knees because it has a big lump and its hard compared to another lump that I have in my body today. I want clarity with the signs that I have now in my body. Thankyou

These painless lumps are very likely to be fatty lumps under the skin. This is more likely to be a genetic problem, as your doctor says.

You may read above in detail about the condition.

Diagnostic test would be a skin biopsy, which may be done if you want. This would clearly detect the contents of the lumps.

I have small lumps all over chest and stomach. I also have larger lumps in shoulders and forearms. I am pretty sure that I have been dealing with a yeast overgrowth in my body. I have acne, perioral dermatitis, hives, itchiness, feelings of something crawling on me. Just recently I had what I believe was a severe muscle spasm on the right side in the middle of my back. I don’t have insurance so I haven’t been to dr. I have jock itch under breast. Recently I started researching all of the symptoms together, could this be a parasite problem. I tried an oregano vulgare essential oil cleanse and the knots and lumps started to decrease, I was feeling better, but now each time I try to take the oregano, with carrier oil, only 3 drops, 2xs a day, I get the same unbearable send me to the floor pain in my back. Spasm or kidney, not sure. Please help, I was a sugar addict but I have made great effort to clean up my diet in the last month and am taking expensive probiotics. I a 44 yr old female and too young for all of these issues, I truly believe they are somehow connected. Any thoughts.

All over abdomen, chest, even out to arm pits these are small, but I have more like muscle knots in my back, shoulders and arms. The other day, I noticed swelling close to arm pit around those lumps, but it has gone down. The large knots are like muscle pain, the small ones in abdomen and chest are only sore if I press on them.

Are these lumps very soft? If yes, they may be lipomas.

Another condition presenting in a similar way is neurofibromatosis.

Because you have been directly been examined by a dermatologist, and taken his opinion, it’s difficult to suggest beyond him.

Hello, I’ve been having these cysts occurring in my armpits and sometimes a bit lower under my arms on my sides or above the armpit. Recently one has developed in my breast (I’m a 16 year old female) and I’m concerned. I went to the doctor once before but he said they were probably from cutting myself in the shower. I don’t think so because they appeared before I shaved and they occur even after he gave me antibiotics. They are painful, and sometimes if they are close to the surface a small head appears (they are mostly always deep enough under the skin for that not to happen) and I squeezed one and found out they are filled with a green pus.

I also previously had an absess on my forehead from an infected pimple that had previously been brought to a head and popped. After a round of antibiotics and a two and a half weeks later the lumps in my armpits started to occur. (Just wondering if this could be linked?)

Do you know why this could be occurring and what they are? They get pretty painful and happen in both armpits and most of the time there are several (two-four) at a time. The ones in my armpits have faded for now (they usually come and swell and then slowly go down) but I am not sure what to do about the one in my breast.

They appear benign. Nothing to worry. You may lave it as such.

Exact diagnosis would require a biopsy from those lumps. However, most likely, they may be your fibrous connective tissue that has got clumped up at a place.

Hello, I have bruising with lumps under the skin; first on my thigh which appeared to be hard so the dr ordered ultrasound- no mass or fluid was the conclusion and now I can hardly feel it. Second was when my son bit me on the arm; it seemed pretty severe for a bite but now the swelling has gone down. Then I had a bruise with a lump on the opposite arm which I don’t know where it came from but the lump feels like the same as was on my thigh. As before the swelling has gone down quite a bit but the lump is still there. Then I felt a sore spot on the crown of my head in the last day or two and felt a lump! Looked in the mirror and can see a lump but doesn’t appear to be bruised. Help! the dr. doesn’t seem concerned but I need to know if I should try and see a specialist and if so, what kind? I just had a baby 3 months ago and I’m also menopausal. I’m going in for a physical but that is over a month away and I have a derm appt. in a week or two. I was eating jello/collagen for skin health every day but have stopped since the lumps on my arms which is about a week. any ideas? thanks!

I have been to a few doctors over the last 2 years trying to find answers. I woke up one day with severe abdominal bloating and several small bb feeling lumps under the skin in my abdomen. You can’t really see them, but can feel them with fingertips and I feel them constantly as they are painful. The bloating can last for days which seems to aggravate the bb shaped lumps causing them to hurt even worse. Now, I have many more that have formed and do not go away. Only answer I’ve received so far is that they are possible cysts and the doctor thought it was abnormal that I would have so many in my abdomen. She did nothing more for me. I’m in pain and discomfort every day from the severe bloating and burning sensations. I’ve changed my diet completely and have lost 64 lbs and am considered to a proper weight for my height now, and nothing has changed as far as whatever this is going on in my abdominal region.

Sometimes, when you’re carrying excess weight in your body, especially around the waist belt, such lumps may get formed. As you lose weight and make dietary changes, shifting to a low fat and high fiber diet, they start regressing in size.

Both sides and they are slightly painful with pressure applied. They don’t seem hard and they seem to move around when pushed. For the last 3 month my cycles have been abnormal some times having 2 in 1 month… I have been a little stressed lately along with having moderately severe anxiety so I assumed my cycles was affected by the stress however I have nausea out of no where off and on and my body is itchy and sometimes feels like I am being pricked with hot needles I also have been having what seems like hot flashes I sweat and feel uncomfortably hot when no one else is. Not sure if it is related but I have a bakers cyst on my knee cap also after my first child the OB told me I had 2 cyst on my ovaries but they would most likely go away on their own…

Most of your problems seem to be related with hormonal problems you’re likely to be having. This may be affecting your menses, having hot flushes and menstrual disturbances. The reason for this problem may be anxiety or those cysts in the ovary.

Lumps over the skin may or may not be related to the cysts in the ovary.

It’s essential to see a doctor for thorough examination and diagnosis.

    Hi, 33/M here.

I have multiple lumps (mostly on forearms/elbow area, 1 or 2 on upper under arms, and one on mid/lower back). Most are around pea sized and a bit firm, I can grab underneath them and move them around. One on the other arm is less firm and larger (but not growing) and can also be moved all around. They are slightly “disc” shaped and I can actually “flip” them.

They’ve been around for a while now, at least a year. I’ve had a doctor (GP) take a glance at one or two of them, then say “pfft, they’re nothing to worry about – they’re probably just lipomas…”. I was there for a cold or some other reason and mentioned them, but they weren’t properly checked.

I don’t have insurance, so I can’t afford to get them biopsied or any other proper checks.

I guess my main question would be that after all this time, it’s highly unlikely to be cancer (or some other mortal sickness/issue), yeah? Or, more to the point, that if it was…this would’ve all progressed by now (or long ago), right?

Thanks for your time! I appreciate any insight on the matter you may have!

    Take care.

I am a 22 year old female and recently lost a little over 50 lbs that I have gained over the past 5 years. I have one 2 year old child and have hypothyroidism.
I’ve been under a lot of stress for the past 4 months (weightloss journey began two months prior) in my personal life with a total of 3 family members deaths and $10,000 worth of plumbing issues to give you just a small taste.
The past three months have been a cluster of symptoms ranging from insomnia, fatigue, severe stress, headaches, stiff neck and shoulders, sore/stiff joints, moodiness, upset stomach, forgetfulness or trouble concentrating at times, and overall just being sore with a splitting headache and exhausted all the time. My doctor checked my thyroid levels and all was good. Now here’s the biggest thing that worries me. My husband is a massage therapist and for the past month when he’s been trying to rub out the sore and stiffness, he’s been finding these little lumps that he describes as “trigger points”. But he says he’s not sure that’s what they are as there are so many. There are several in my arms and legs, shoulders and back of neck, lowback and hips. Should I be concerned? The rest of the symptoms I chalked up to the amount of stress I’m under and my body adjusting to resent weight loss, but the lumps freak me out. Any idea what they could be?

They feel like hard peas almost. They are slightly moveable, but on a very small scale. They are painful when pressed and make the surrounding areas sore. I was mistaking the pain they cause as tight muscles perhaps? Like stiffness almost, but not to the point of hindering movement terribly. I would compare it to how you would feel the morning after doing some crazy, new, super intense workout. No redness over them and no itchiness.

During and after sex I have left side/pelvic pain and tailbone pain. I had a hysterectomy due to endo at 33, my ovaries were not removed. Over the next year I was having even more pain, 13 months after that surgery I was diagnosed with ovarian cyst and endo that was growing into my bowels and had surgery to remove it and ovaries. I have also had bladder/kidney infections and frequent urination my whole life. I had a hydro with distention about 1 and 1/2 year ago and was diagnosed with IC, the surgeon said I had no protective layer left on my bladder. He says the next step would be to remove my bladder if symptoms persist. Is that my best route and would it help my pain with sex?

I’m a 52 year old male I have had lump under my skin since I was in my 20s. I have had several lipomas removed one on my shoulder that the doctor said was the largest he had ever seen, in hi 25 years of surgery. I have had numerous ones growing over the years most are painfully some are hard some soft I’ve even had a breast X-ray mammogram to make sure the ones in the breast are not cancer. But now I just checked my mid section of my body I now have hundreds of tiny to pea up to quarter and golf ball size lumps all over my body most recently the ones in my abdomen stomach area were there are literally a hundred or more little ones this is really scary. Am I in Danger?

Hello, I am a 35 year old women 3 children youngest will be 2 in October. I suffered Postpartum Cardiomyopathy why my baby with EF of 15 but my EF has returned to a healthy rate. I have a few tiny lumps on the undersides of my forearms just below my elbow and one on my tricep. They are soft and move and I only notice pain when I lean on my forearms or putting pressure on that part of my arms for a long period of time. I did take lasix for a prolonged time. I do have a few other spots like this that I have had most of my life but the face that 4 or 5 have shown up over the last 6 months has freaked me out. I currently take adver for my asthma along with an allergy med.
I am at my heaviest I have ever been in my life 5’ 4 & 193lbs (when not pregnant) and I have not been eating healthy for a few months (depression).
Coulda the lumps be cancer, related to my Cardiomyopathy, my weight?
    Thank You for your time

Most likely, those lumps are related to your weight.

You need to shift to a healthy diet at the earliest. Eating healthy would also alleviate your depression. Drink plenty of water.

How big and how many in total? Are they soft, firm or hard? Do they ooze out any fluid? Any medical illness your father is suffering from?

Have you gained weight recently? If yes, these could be fatty deposits. Such deposits regress gradually as you lose weight.

I have loads of hard lumps under the skin on my thighs, lower arms and stomach. I recently lost 50 pounds and I felt the ones on my stomach. One on the stomach is quite large. They are not painful. I have had these lumps for years. They are not painful. They just feel weird. I have not worried about them and have contributed them to being overweight. I am in a fitness program now and losing weight. It is now that I noticed the lumps under the skin of my stomach. The lumps on my body do not go away. Are these lipomas?

Hi. My wife gave birth by C-section 6 months ago and has just noticed many small lumps under her skin in the abdominal area (directly under the area affected by stretch marks). They are not visible i.e. they are only detectable through touch when standing. They are not painful, and can move somewhat. She is not overweight at all. Any idea what these might be? Many thanks in advance

Are they lumps soft, firm or hard to touch? Are they movable underneath the skin? Any redness there?

Hello. I have lump on my back torso (left side) for the past 9 years that has grown into egg size now. Then 2 years ago my wife discovered two more lumps near the center on my chest that is slowly growing too. I’m 45 years old and fairly healthy. I don’t smoke and only drink occasionally. I never had a serious sickness since my teen days. The lumps are not hard and painless. What could it be? Thank you in advance.

You need to be physically examined by a doctor for exact diagnosis.

From your description, they appear to be localized collections of fatty tissues and fibers. Generally harmless.

In the last month I have had multiple (100) small soft lumps which started in left hand, and now in both hands and arms. They are growing in size and movable, pain when touched and now the lumps seen under skin and dark spots. My skin on my hands became very wrinkled very fast. My fingers are twisted – painful. knuckle growing (today I found second finger can hardly bend) This occurred in two weeks. I’m 77, obese, have Myathenia Gravis, CHF and now can hardly move without severe breathing and wheezing. My oxygen level is 94 to 100 with no oxygen. Wear BiPap without oxygen. I am fully vaccinated but had Covid and in hospital twice last year. Thanks for your advice.

May be your primary care giver, to start with.

Needs examination for diagnosis. Could be some autoimmune pathology.
