Nausea and vomiting are not diseases on their own, but rather symptoms caused by many different diseases. The underlying problem may be psychogenic or physical. It may be associated with the gastrointestinal tract, liver or even the brain or the middle ear.

A complete history of the patient with proper examination is required to reach any conclusion.

Common causes of Nausea in Young Male

Do you have any other symptom along with nausea? Associated symptom, if any, needs to be noted. They may help in giving a better idea about what the cause may be.

Here are some possible reasons:

  • Peptic ulcer– It is common in young adults. Ulcers appear on the mucosal lining of the stomach. This leads to nausea (vomiting sensation). Such nausea is more in the morning hours, just after getting up from bed, since the stomach is empty then. The patient may also have some bloating and feel some acidity. Treatment is a simple use of antacid like gelusil gel.
  • Stress may also lead to nausea. If you are overstressed at work or home, you may feel nauseated. Stress may also lead to peptic ulcers that may further worsen the problem.
  • Viral Gastroenteritis or any other intestinal infection. In such cases, the patient also has some stomach upsets, difficulty in digestion, history of frequent visit to the washroom, stomache. Fever may be there.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency– This is becoming very common these days. A lack of this vitamin may lead to nausea, abdominal bloating and gas, a sick feeling in the stomach and weight loss. You may feel an aversion towards food. For making a diagnosis, you need to get your blood levels for this vitamins checked up.
  • Headaches, especially migraines. Here, nausea will be accompanied with some headache, which are commanly half headed.
  • Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis- These are middle ear problems. The patient feels dizzy, nauseated and there may be a loss of balance.
  • Chronic indigestion condition. Here, the patient has poor digestion since a long time. Evaluation is required.
  • Marijuana or other recreational drug use
  • As a side effect of certain medications- See if you taking any medicine on a regular basis.

You need a complete evaluation by a doctor to know why you have nausea.

Steps That May Help to Control Nausea

  • Drink adequate water.
  • Eat light and bland food. Don’t make it very spicy.
  • Avoid fried, fatty stuff.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth after eating. It may sometimes trigger nausea.
  • Drink and eat slowly.
  • Stay active and don’t starve yourself. Take regular diets. Try to take a balanced diet, rich in all nutrients.
  • You may add some multivitamin supplement (containing vitamin B12) to your diet.

Better to see a doctor for check up. The pain may be from your tummy or else where. We cannot be sure without a physical exam.

He needs to be checked up thoroughly for diagnosis.

A common reason causing this is vitamin B12 deficiency. Correction requires giving injections or mega doses of the vitamin.

Any pain in tummy, your dietary pattern, do you sleep late at night, do you have for dinner at time?

Since it has been 37 hours without relief, it’s better to be examined in ER. Diagnosis would depend upon where exactly is the pain, any stiffness of abdomen there and many other signs that a doctor needs to see.

My 19 year old son is healthy and strong. Never had any physical issues. For the last several weeks he was trying to lose just a little weight. He was getting a little over 200 and that concerned him. He is right around 6 ft tall. He wanted a salad every day for lunch so that what I made him. He ate those for probably 3 weeks and other food for supper. Seemingly since then, has had lost some appetite and feels full before he even finishes a meal. If he does finish the meal, he will sometimes gag and feel nauseaus. Other times when he’s not eating, he can still feel nauseaus. He has no stomach pain and is not vomiting. Another odd thing for him is that he has been sleeping a lot more than usual. He will come home from work and take a nap which is not normally like him. At this point, he doesn’t hav any health insurance so I am trying to self diagnose. Obviously, if this continues, we will do what we hav to do abt seeing a doctor. Just wondered ur thought on this? Thank you

Appears normal. He has lost his appetite, as you planned for him.

Stomach is like an elastic bag that stretches to accommodate more food if you keep eating. As you cut down on food, the capacity of this bag reduces.

This may be good for him. Obesity sets foundation for many worrisome diseases in future.

Having more of fruits and vegetables detoxifies the body, and may induce sleep. There’s no problem.

However, let him have some grain in his other meals. He may cut down on calories but not starve.

My son is 19. He has been vomiting every day for at least a week. It is especially bad in the morning but lasts the whole day. He is unable to eat until after 10 pm. It is very difficult for him to go to work. He works outside, manual labor. He smokes pot daily (massive amounts mostly late at night) and I know he was using xanex and lean a few weeks ago but doesn’t have anymore. He has a very hard time going to sleep at night no matter how tired he is. He seems to stay up smoking and eating. He has been doing this for years without being sick all the time. He says he doesn’t know what he is doing that is making him sick but I am sure there must be something. This is not normal.

Needs to be examined in a hospital for diagnosis.

May be, side effects of huge doses of pot he has taken are coming up.

Hi, I’m 22 yr old male and I’ve been experiencing nausea whenever I try to eat for the past few days. I do smoke marijuana regularly and I’ve been under some stress as well. What should I do?
Also, my gf may have stomach ulcers because of her recent symptoms. Could her health affect mine?

You need to quit the drug immediately and start detoxifying yourself. As you’ll cleanse your body system, all these symptoms would vanish and you’ll feel fresh and energetic. Appetite would return on its own.

This would make a healthy impact upon your girlfriend as well.

      What you need to do-
      Stop taking the drug.
Abstain from alcohol. Take limited tea and coffee.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drink a glass whenever you need a beverage.
Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily meals.
Restrict to fried fatty food stuff.

You don’t have to deworm yourself so regularly. If you suspect worms, a better idea would be confirming it via a stool culture.

Start taking a Vitamin B complex tablet/ capsules on a daily basis, for a month. Let us know if your symptoms improve.

Can you detail the pain for us? Where exactly is it located, does it last all day, any nausea associated with it, any movements that aggravate it, how does it get relieved?

In general, such pains cal for an ultrasound. Some viscera in your abdomen may be inflamed.

There’s some factor that works outside home to make you feel sick. Needs to be investigated.

It would to difficult to comment further without actual examination.

Hi my son is 24 and has nausea and vomiting as well as diarrhea and constipation. He’s had this for some time. Comes and goes. He’s lost weight and says he doesn’t always have an appetite. I myself suffer from severe IBS. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have IBS, it’s better to get your son examined well by a gastroenterologist. Also, his vitamin B12 levels need to be checked.

Do update us about his health issue.

The cause is likely to be pot smoking. You need to quit smoking. Join a rehab center at the earliest to get relief.

    Hello,
My son is 17 yo and very healthy, he doesn’t smoke, drink or do any drugs. The only medications he is taking are his vitamins: C, magnesium, D3+ K2, zinc.
For the past week he’s been awaking with a feeling of nausea that leads to vomiting (mostly bile)
Sometimes the nausea last the whole day other times goes away after having some breakfast.Today he vomited after breakfast and after lunch. I’m wondering if I should take him to a doctor or try some antacid over the counter.
    Thank you

Try giving him anta acids first. Buy any over the counter pills or solutions.

There may be time spans when his stomach stays empty for long hours. During such phases, stomach prduces excess acid, thus giving him the nausea and vomiting.

It is advisable to take a bland and alkaline breakfast in the morning, soon after getting up. Like milk, banana or breads. Avoid spicy or acidic food stuff as the first meal.

Better ask him to pop an anta acid as soon as he gets up in the morning. Freshen up and have his breakfast.

It’s not important to eat a lot, but to eat intermittently, not letting the stomach be empty for long hours. If he doesn’t wish to take more food or is calorie conscious, he may take alkaline fruits instead. No problem.

      Avoid solo fruit juice meals.

Other things to limit would be tea and coffee. They are acidic in nature.

My son is 13 and periodically vomits and has diarrhea in the morning. For a while we thought he developed an intolerance to corn because he was eating popcorn nearly every night but after eliminating and reintroducing there was no issue. Sometimes there will be remnants of dinner the night before but most often it’s bile. The nausea goes away pretty soon and he can eat with no problem. I also thought it might be a sensitive digestive system as I have IBS and he had colic as a baby. He’s healthy, active, and no other health issues. Any ideas?

It’s difficult to be precise without actually examining your boy.

From your description, this sounds like an infection. Diarrhea is usually indicative of it. Could be seasonal stomach flu. Just give him light regular meals. Likely to be alright within a week by itself. Also watch for any rise in temperature at any time of the day. Fevers usually suggest infections.

If the problem persists, better see a doctor for diagnosis.
