Effect of Alcohol on Blood Pressure

Q: Dear doctor, I am a diabetic and blood pressure person taking tablet since last 3 years. Can I consume 50 ml alcohol every day? Will it give any trouble to me?

Reply:

Alcohol is not a recommended beverage to be taken. It increases blood pressure, both in short and long term.

High blood pressure patients can easily reduce a few points in their blood pressure reading by quitting alcohol.

Alcohol may also interfere with the working of certain blood pressure lowering medications. It may reduce their effectiveness and worsen their side effects.

Furthermore, being a calorie rich stuff, alcohol adds up to the calories you are taking. These extra calories may also contribute to both, increase in blood pressure and blood sugar.

The best policy would be to leave alcohol.
