Do Alprazolam and Lorazepam Cause High BP and Hyperglycemia?

Q: Sir, in 2008 my fasting blood sugar was 80. I visited a doctor for mental tension. He give Trika 1mg and Trapex 2 mg per day. Later I reduced the tablet and stopped it in 2010. After that my medical checkup showed that my fasting sugar was 160 and postprandial sugar 260. My BP was 150/110. I strongly believe that it is the side effect of the tablet. Is it possible? My doctor does not accept my argument.

Reply:

Both trika (alprazolam) and trapex (lorazepam) are anxiolytic drugs.

It is unlikely for these medicines to have caused high blood pressure and sugar.

Generally speaking, these pills may give side effects like drowsiness, muscle incoordination, fatigue, confusion and dizziness. Drug dependency for them is another potential side effect.
