Thumb Injury With Hematoma

Q: About 2 months ago I fell pretty hard on my right thumb. I hit the middle joint of it. The area that was hit was black for a while and then it went away. Now there is a hard lump in that area. It hurts if I touch it but otherwise it doesn’t hurt if left alone. What could this be and should I get an X-ray?

Possibly, when you hurt your thumb, you got a hematoma there. A hematoma is collected blood within a tissue.

With time, the hematoma started getting resolved. The hard lump left now is likely to be the left over products of the hematoma, that is, some blood clots, fibrin like materials etc.

The lump may take another 15 to 20 days to go. There is nothing to worry.

Move your thumb gently in all directions. If you are able to do it without much pain, there is nothing to worry. If not, you may get an X-ray done to rule out any possibility of fracture or bone injury.
