How to Get Tested for Chlamydia and Syphilis?

Q: My ESR 1 hour test was normal 3 times. I had risky behaviors 8 months ago. Does it mean I am not infected by syphilis or chlamydia? I am a male, 39 years old.

ESR is not a diagnostic test. So a normal ESR would say to a maximum that there is less probability of active infection in the body. However, the STD infection may be there in inactive form.

Diagnostic Tests for Syphilis

  • Diagnosis is made after examining the patient for any sores, ulcers or any other lesion in the genitals. If any lesion is found, a scraping may be taken from it and examined under the microscope for the presence of spirochetes (causative organism of syphilis).
  • The standard blood tests for syphilis is called the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) and Rapid Plasminogen Reagent (RPR) tests. These detect the presence of specific antibodies produced by the body against the causative organism of syphilis.

Diagnostic Test for Chlamydia

Clinical examination of the patient is done. Clinical symptoms, if any, are correlated to form a diagnosis.

A specific swab test is done. Here, a slim swab is inserted into the end of the penis to get a sample from the urethra. This specimen is examined for the presence of any causative organism.

In some cases, swab may also be taken from the anus to test for the presence of chlamydia.

What did your doctor say about the diagnosis?

Bumps may recur if the infected pus keeps touching the healthy nearby area. Be particular about hygiene down there.
