Ovarian Serous Cystadenoma
Q: Hi, I am Helen. As I mentioned in my last email, I removed 8 cm ovarian cyst 15 days ago. It was sent to laboratory and the microscopic finding was- ‘ovarian cortical stroma lined by a single layer of tall columnar ciliated surface epithelium in keeping with serous cystadenoma. Conclusion: serous cystadenoma’. Please advise.

It is good that you got it removed.
Serous cystadenomas of the ovary are considered to be benign growths of the ovarian cells. Though they are usually benign (not cancerous), there are chances of their conversion into cancerous growths. So it is advisable to get them removed.
Other Reasons for Excising Out Serous Adenomas
- They may become symptomatic and give rise to pain.
- They may get big and put pressure on adjoining structures.
- They may burst.
- They may get twisted and necrosed. This condition is quite painful.
- They may eventually become cancerous.
About the Surgery
It is usually adequate to remove the cyst with its wall completely.
However, sometimes when the cyst is very big, or there has been any such cyst in the past, it becomes essential to remove the ovary and the adjacent tube as well. The procedure is called salpingo-oopherectomy. This assures that the cyst will not occur again.
