Birth Control OC Pills and Ovarian Cysts

Q: Hi, I am 30 years old and have 2 kids. I had my second child 2 years ago. After that I didn’t have sex and took birth control pills. Recently I was diagnosed with septic ovarian cyst measuring 6.40 cm, which was removed surgically and was sent to pathology. I want to know if I had the cyst because of the pills? Is there any chance that the cyst may come back again? Please advice.

There is no evidence that birth control pills lead to ovarian cyst formation. On the contrary, they are used as a treatment in women who suffer from recurrent cyst formation.

Cyst in the ovary commonly occur in women of reproductive age group. They are quite common. Mostly they are symptomless and go unnoticed.

You may read here in details about how ovarian cysts are formed.

Usually, no treatment is required. They gradually disappear on their own.

In cases where they complicate, like getting infected, twisted or getting too large, medical intervention is necessary.

Your probability of getting another cyst is the same as any other women. You are not more prone for cyst formation.

However, in rare cases where the surgical removal of the cyst has not been done completely, the left over cystic wall (membrane) may be a cause of recurrent cyst formation.
