Home Care for Genital Area Pimples in Women

Pimples in the vaginal area are common among teens, early adulthood and even in the later years of female life. Reasons are many and differ from case to case. To manage these pimples effectively, it would be a good idea to understand the causes behind them.

Causes of Vaginal Acne

  • During teens and early adult life, there is an excessive sweating and oil production in genital area. This is to aid lubrication during sexual activities. These excessive secretions, along with dead cell debris or dirt lying there, may clog the skin pores and lead to a bump like lesion- an acne.
  • Wearing tight underwears made up of non-absorbent cloth may trap moisture in the pubic region. This makes grounds for pimple formation.
  • Infection like herpes and STDs  produce lesions which resemble acne in appearance. They are identified by their accompanying signs and symptoms, which are discussed below.

Vaginal Blackhead

Blackheads are common over the genital region. Basically, a blackhead, also called comedo, is nothing but a mild acne. It is formed when the pore of a hair follicle gets clogged up with dead cells, sebum and dirt.

If its covered with skin, we call it a white head. When not covered with skin, its contents get exposed to air and become oxidized. They show as a blackish material and the comedo is called a black head.

A comedo may swell up or clog further to become a pimple. While a pimple is big and may get infected, blackhead are small and don’t get infected.

Management

Self assess whether this is a simple acne or an infection such as an STD, which is presenting with acne like lesions.

Infections would show other signs too, besides acne. These include vaginal discharge, burning, itching, redness and swelling. Read more on distinguishing between simple vaginal acne and STD lesions. For all infections, you need to see a doctor. Medical treatment would be necessary.

However, more commonly pimples are due to clogged skin pores. Sometimes we sweat too much, as in teenage and early adult life. Sweat and sebum may lead to pimple formation just like anywhere else in the body.

Such pimples are controlled by keeping the area clean and dry. A daily wash with gentle exfoliation with a cloth or loofah is recommended. Baby powder may be applied to maintain dryness, but only on the skin and not the pink mucosa. You may apply it on the outer labia and adjoining skin. Avoid putting it on mucosal surfaces.

Self Care to Get Rid of Vaginal Pimples

  • Wash the area with plain water twice a day. You may do it once while bathing and once before bedtime. No soaps or gels are required for washing this region. They are actually bad for the overall vaginal health and make it prone to pimple formation. Read more on washing the vagina.
  • Wear cotton panties, at least at bed time, which will absorb any extra moisture.
  • Let the panties be loose and breathable.
  • Avoid eating too much of fried and greasy stuffs. They aid in pimple production. Instead, eat more of green leafy vegetables and fresh seasonal fruits. They are natural purifier for the skin and blood.
  • Drink lots of water and fruit juices.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol. These drinks are dehydrating for the skin. Although it may seem counterintuitive, but dry genital skin is more prone to pimple formation.
  • Eating fresh yogurt may aid in quicker recovery. Yogurt contains friendly bacteria, that help in maintaining an ideal pH in the genital region.
  • Exercising on a daily basis is essential. Stay active; it allows your skin to breathe and let your blood flowing efficiently throughout the body. Besides exercising is the only way we move lymph in our lymphatic channels. Cleaner lymphatic channels would cause reduction in pimples on the body.

What to Do if a Pimple Gets Infected?

Never pop or squeeze your vaginal acne. This would only traumatize and infect it.

An infected pimple needs to be kept clean and dry. You may try warm compress over it so that it gradually softens. As its outer covering softens, it may slowly drain out the pus.

Drainage of pus eases tension and relieves pain immediately.

You may need to apply a topical antibiotic, like mupirocin (bactroban) over the infected pimple for 3 to 5 days.

Make sure that pus doesn’t come in contact with the surrounding area. This may infect other areas and result in formation of more pimples.

I never used to have these pimples or warts on my vagina, but lately they are constantly there. When they come up, I know immediately that the area will now start paining me. I am also experiencing some itching in my vagina.

I was tested for possible infections but I don’t have any of these symptoms that come and go. There is no odor or excess discharge. I need some answers and I’m little embarrassed to see a physician.

I haven’t been sexually active in two years and when I was I didn’t experience this itching on a regulars basis. The warts or bumps were not as frequent as now and the only thing I can do to relieve the pain is to burst the pimples.

I need some answers since it is embarrassing and depressing. I only had one sexual partner for the past 5 years.

Pimples in that area may come and go. Some girls note their occurrence with cycles. However, if your pimples stay for very long periods, it is recommended you visit a doctor.

Physical examination may be important for diagnosis. STDs need to be ruled out.

Looks like a pimple. It is normal to have pimples in your age group. Just keep the area clean and dry. The pimple would gradually regress by itself.

Read about cleaning the genital area.

During menses, the moistness of the vaginal region increases making it more favorable for pimples to grow. So, you may note flaring of such lesions during menses. Just keeping the area clean and dry would help.

Sometimes pus comes out or like this black thing that’s like a oily solid that’s yellow on the bottom. When I try to pop it, like it hurts bad and they always occur. Another thing is my vagina has I guess some type of discharge all the the time like it’s either white or like a clear liquid substances, that if you touch it stretches almost like mucus, and it sometimes has an odor.

Do you have any itching in your vagina?

Your vaginal discharge sounds normal, though excessive in amount. Read on differentiating between normal and pathological vaginal discharge.

It is common to get pimples and excess vaginal discharge during teens and early twenties.

This is because these years are characterized with plenty of lubricating secretions. Also, we sweat more during these years. All this form a ground for pimple formation.

You need to keep your groin area clean and dry to prevent the occurrence of pimples. Wear loose cotton underwear only. This allows adequate ventilation and helps keeping the area dry.

Eat more of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid fried fatty meals, which predispose to pimples. Read more on the topic in the above written article.

I’m a fifteen year old virgin, and I have the idea that this is not at all normal, seeing as this has been this way all my life. Do you have any pus in the pores you are describing? Any itching or redness around them?

If not, these pores are likely to be due to shaving. They are not exactly pores. They are scars formed around hair shaft follicles, created due to the little injury caused while you shave.

The commonest cause of having pain in the bladder area is holding the urine for a long time. Apart from this, you may have pain if you get UTI.

Likely to be pimples. Read above about taking care of them. You may start using mupirocin ointment over them.

Since you are sexually active, it’s recommended you go for a check up to rule out the presence of any STD.

Wear loose cotton underwears. Keep the area well washed and dry throughout the day. Let your lowers be loose. All these steps help in preventing the occurrence of pimples.

If you have pain in any of the pimple, start applying mupirocin ointment (or any other topical aantibiotic cream) over it.

Try using a vaginal emollient after washing the area. Use it twice daily. This would prevent dryness down there and keep the area supple.

Are you sexually active? If not, you need to manage these pimples by keeping the area down there clean.

Alter your diet in such a way that it contain less of fried, fatty stuff. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in it. These are the best detoxifiers for the body, and limit the occurrence of pimples.

If you get a pimple, start applying a topical antibiotic cream, like mupirocin or bactroban, over it.

If you don’t get your menses, you may have to go for a pregnancy test.

As for the pimples and the swelling, keep the area clean and dry. Let it regain back its natural pH and flora. It would get alright. Read here in details-http://buddymd.com/balance-vaginal-ph

You may use a prebiotic vaginal wash for that area.

Likely to be a clogged gland there. It would gradually regress on its own. Just avoid friction over it.

However, if it doesn’t heal or pains too much, antibiotics would be needed.

There’s nothing to worry. That’s a pimple. Is it on the outer lip? If yes, you may start using an antibiotic ointment over it. Mupirocin/ bactroban may be used thrice daily.

Hello. After I shave, I’m fine, but a day or two later it’s irritated, red, itchy, and painful to the touch. I feel like it’s not razor burn since it happens so much later. Could it be acne? I have been tested and I do not have any STIs.

This is normal. Just keep the area well moisturized daily. Any vaginal emollient may be used.
Also, use a sharp razor for shaving.

But now have a dumb near my virginal hole and it didn’t hurt at first until I tried to pop it. It’s all red and the size of a marble. I’m 17, never had sex before. I don’t want to tell my mom and I’m to embarrass to go to the doctor and I don’t have money for a doctor visit. I freaking out because it hurts so much. I have dampened a cloth and but it in the microwave to steam it. How can I get rid of it fast.

5 years, that’s a cyst, not infected. It may stay like that, undisturbed.

Or else, you may get that removed surgically.

Appears infected, may be containing pus in it. Try warm compress over it. This would soften it and may help draining pus from inside.

Going to a doctor is a better idea. He will drain pus, if required, and give you appropriate antibiotics.

These bumps on my vagina hurts most of the Tim so I tend to pop them. I don’t shave a lot neither. I want to know if maybe me having a lot of ance is causing this or how to get rid of it?

Such bumps usually dry up on their own with time.

However, forcibly popping any pimple may leave a scar there.

Hi. I’m 16 years old, and not sexually active, still a virgin. Yesterday I noticed a red pimple looking bump on the inner edge of my labia majora. I am quite sure it is a pimple. But not sure where to go from here. From reading on this page it seems that the area is supposed to be kept dry and clean, but my question is, does masturbation make it worse/should it be avoided while the pimple is healing?

Hi I’m 21 and I’ve been having these pimples(?) On my vagina. It like on the pubic area region and at first it seems to be starting as a hard ball under the skin then the head appears later. I had one but it went away after I popped it but now I just noticed that another hard ball has appeared right next to were I had the other one. I’m used to having one every once in a while but this is the first time one has appeared so soon after . I’m a little scared. Is this normal and how can I stop it?
Also I’m a virgin and I don’t shave my pubic region ( I just trim)

Could be infected pimples or folliculitis, where the hair root in the pubic region get infected. This happen when excess secretions and moisture get trapped there.

You need to apply an antibiotic ointment over them. Start using one, (mupirocin/ bacitracin) may be used twice daily. Spread it over each lesion you have there.

Keep the region clean and well ventilated. Avoid friction over pimples. If any pimple becomes painful or you see pus in it, warm compress may be used over it. This would soften the skin over it and help in draining out pus.

However, do not force drainage. Be gentle.

Most of them go away with time. Avoid squeezing or scratching them. This may cause scar tissue to form there. In such cases, marks may remain there for long times.

Potato extract may be used there. Take a raw potato, grate it and directly apply it over the affected area. Let it stay for 15 minutes daily .

This extract is non irritant and may lighten marks in 10 to 15 days.

Hi. I’m 21 and in a monogamous relationship with my partner. I was a virgin before him and haven’t had any other sexual partners aside from him. He’s also been tested negative for STD’s. I’ve been sexually active for more than a year now with the same partner I’ve mentioned. we haven’t had sex for a month already.
I’ve notice a lump on my labia a few days ago when it began to hurt a bit. After a few days, it became inflamed and hurts a bit more. It’s reddish and pus filled. It’s not usually painful but when it is touched, or it comes in contact with clothing, it hurts. I tried popping it (which is a bad idea) and puss came out and then blood. It’s in the lower area of the labia so sometimes when I sit down, it kind of hits that area. I’m a bit worried about what it is.

I’m thinking it might be the wipes I used one time or if might be a sanitary pad I bought when I was out of the country? I’m really worried

It’s not as bad as it use to be but just wandering what I can to to help with them as I’m regularly washing etc, I don’t believe it’s to do with shaving as when I don’t shave it makes no difference.
