Bumps on Labia Minora

The skin and mucosa in the pubic area is richly supplied with oil secreting glands. These are particularly active during teens and early adulthood.

Pimples formed here are basically clogged glands, containing secretions inside them.

What Makes the Pubic Area a Favorite Place For Pimples

Groin region is one of the commonest places where you are likely to get pimples.

This is because of the following reasons:

  • This area is moist all the day,
  • A lot of oily secretions are produced here, especially during teenage and early adulthood
  • The area suffers a lot of friction during walking and other movements throughout the day.

All this aids in clogging of gland ducts and, therefore, pimples erupt.

Presenting Symptoms

  • A bump or tiny swelling anywhere on the labia
  • Discomfort during walking or other movements
  • The bump may or may not be painful
  • Redness in the area surrounding the pimple

Complications

Pimples of this region may get infected. This is because of the numerous bacteria present here.

The substance inside the pimple is an excellent ground for bacterial growth. If we scratch, pop or squeeze the pimple, we are likely to let the bacteria, residing over the skin surface, get inside it.

Once infected, the pimple becomes painful. It may grow in size due to the bacterial activity inside it.

The adjoining area becomes red and slightly swollen. Sometimes, pus may ooze out of the lesion.

Management

Small painless pimples are managed by simple rules of hygiene.

  • Keep the area clean and dry. Wash your genitals everyday, during bathing, with plain water. Avoid using soaps or gels here. They may make the surface dry and rough, promoting sloughing of tissues, hence leading to more of pimples.
  • Wear loose cotton underwears as far as possible. Cotton fabric is a good absorbent and keeps away moisture from accumulating here.
  • The region needs to be well ventilated. Tight fitting garments should be avoided, especially during warmer days.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Have lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Avoid fried fatty food stuff that are likely to give you more pimples.

For pimples that are painful or too big in size, topical antibiotics are required with proper drainage of pus.

  • Do warm compress over the pimple to soften their walls. As the walls soften, draining the pus becomes easier. Never force drainage. Only drain the pus that comes out easily.
  • Clean the pimple and nearby area. Apply mupirocin (bactroban) over it, twice daily for 3 to 5 days. This ointment is a topical antibiotic. If not available, any other topical antibiotic cream may be used instead.

Medical Advice (Q&As) on “Pimples on Inner Labia

Hi, I’m 14 years old. Recently, I’ve been experiencing some sort of bump on my labia after my periods. I’m sure it’s not a pimple, because I can’t feel it stinging. And I honestly don’t feel it unless I’m touching it. When I do touch it, it feels sore, but it doesn’t sting. It’s about the size of an average pimple, but I just want to make sure it’s not something extremely major. I wasn’t aware you could get pimples on your inner labia. I can’t see it well enough to know for sure what it is. Any advice?

It does look like that you have a pimple on your labia minora. These kind of bumps also have a tendency to flare up during menstrual periods. You may read more about the inner labia pimples in the above written article.

I have a red bump on my outer labia. And it flared up during my period. It doesn’t hurt when not squeeze. Is it normal? I’m 24 and not sexually active. I’m worried about it. Does the bump comes off by itself? Thanks.

It sounds like a pimple. It is normal for pimples to erupt by themselves.

Just keep the region clean and dry. Avoid friction over the bump. You may try warm compress over the pimple, twice daily.

The lesion is likely to subside on its own with time.

Yesterday morning, I felt a bit uncomfortable down there when it was touched or if I went to the bathroom, but I didn’t pay any attention to it. Last night when I went to shower, I felt a little bump and I immediately got worried. Later in the evening, I went to take a closer look. It was a large pimple (or that’s how I diagnosed it after reading up on it on the internet), yellow with a bit of redness around it. It was a bit painful, so I decided it might help to puncture it and see if it relieves some of the pain. A lot of yellow substance came out and I applied bactroban topical after. However, today, I see more of these ‘pimples’ are popping up. (One small one, and one that looks like it’s beginning to form.) They are in my inner labia, and the three pimples aren’t close to each other, or not that close. This makes me worried since it seems to be spreading. I have never been sexually active and I don’t shave, I trim. What is it? Should I be worried? Will Bactroban cure it? If this happened once, does it mean it will reoccur in the future? This never happened to me before.

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

It is likely that when you punctured the pimple, pus inside it spilled and infected the adjoining areas. This may be the reason why you are getting more of them.

You just need to keep the area clean and dry. Keep applying bactroban on every pimple you get. It may take a week before these lesions subside.

Also, it would help if you eat healthy. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid junk food and fried stuff. Include home made curd in your meal, at least once in a day.

Hello, lately I have been having problems with my inner labia. There seems to be a series of bumps on the left side that are more pronounced than the right. In addition, these bumps can get extremely sensitive to the point where it is distracting, and even keeping me from sleep. It is only on the left side, though. I’m looking for solutions but I’m worried that it might be something as bad as PGAD. Do you have any suggestions about what might be happening?

What’s your age? Are you sexually active?

If you are a young adult, these are likely to be pimples. You just need to keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwear to keep the groin are well ventilated. Trapping of moisture there predisposes to pimple formation. Read above about the various steps to be taken to get rid of pimples.

PGAD, or persistent genital arousal disorder, is a condition where you are constantly aroused, though not involved or thinking of sex all time. The condition may be disturbing in initial phases. Later on, this constant arousal may become painful.

Do you have any such symptom? Let us know.

I am 21, and no, I’m not sexually active.
The bumps are very tiny, like on the right but more pronounced. And yes, I do have some of those symptoms and was convinced that I probably had PGAD. Although it isn’t as bad as having a number of orgasms every day, it has been causing me an extreme amount of distress, even more so because I already have anxiety problems. I was wondering can it be localized to one part of the genital area?

I’m not sure and I’m really scared about this. I think I may have a pimple on my left inner labia and it is extremely painful. I haven’t seen the main white head like you would see on a pimple, I’ve only seen several little white things. It’s getting hard to walk and get up and it’s only been two days with this thing. I’ve soaked in warm/hot water mixed with espom salt, something my mother recommend and from what I could look up on the internet. I haven’t gone to the doctors because I don’t have any type of insurance and I don’t have the money to go. So, I’m relying on home remedies but I don’t know what it is or how to go about it.

Hi, I am 27, and worried about the bump/pimple on my Labia Majora, first I got to notice it during my period. It was like a very tiny bump that time so I ignored it but days after my period, then days after I felt that it becomes bigger and tried to check on the mirror but I can’t see the bump itself it’s as if it is inside. Though it is not painful. I am very particular with my hygiene especially on that part but this is the first time I’ve been experiencing it and so I am worried about it.

It is likely to be a pimple (clogged gland) on your labia majora. Try warm compress over it. Do it twice daily, everyday.

It is likely to soften and regress with time. If it doesn’t, or becomes painful, you may start using topical antibiotics (mupirocin) over the lesion.

This may be related to your diet and personal hygiene.

Wash the area daily and dry dab it. Wear loose cotton underwear most of the time, to ensure that the area breathes throughout the day. Non absorbent, synthetic clothes make you more prone to pimples.

Okay, so I have a pimple. I get them all over my inner vagina. I popped one and some hard white substance came out and it started bleeding. I get them all the time. What do you think it is?

There usually big and they grow by the hole entering in to my vagina and around my anus area. They don’t itch or anything there, just there and when I pop them a hard white substance comes out.

These are pimples down there, that is blocked sebaceous glands. You get there in the groin like you have them else where.

The white substance that comes out of them is likely to be sebum.

It is suggested that you don’t pop them. This may infect them and make the pimple big and painful.

Pimples are best treated by letting the area be clean and dry. Wash the region daily with water, no soap or gel. Then wear loose cotton underwear to let the area breathe and be free from moisture all the day.

Eat less of junk food and fatty stuff. The more fruit and vegetables you consume, the lesser are the chances for pimples to occur. Also, drinking adequate amount of water helps in detoxifying.

I’m not really sure what’s going on. I’ve had these little white bumps on the inside part of my labia for a long time. They sort of look like white heads, and sometimes if I squeeze some of them a bit of white stuff comes out. Nothing happens if I try to squeeze most of them though. And the further I get from the outer part of my labia, the smaller and closer together they get. They don’t hurt or itch or anything. I’m just really worried because I don’t know what they are. I’m 14 and I’ve never had sex, but I have masturbated. I don’t know if that makes a difference. These little bumps have been there for 2 years and I thought they would go away but they haven’t. I’m 17 and sexually inactive, but I have multiple, painful pimples(I think) on my inner labia and a little into my vaginal orifice. This appeared overnight and worsened throughout the day. The area is swollen and very red as well. My boyfriend thinks he has poison ivy(unprofessional diagnosis of some type of rash) on his chest, hand, and penis, and I have been kissing him recently, but we have been no where near any affected area of his body, minus his hand holding mine. He is also not sexually active with anyone. Based on pictures and symptoms(I have been feeling feverish and sick with a sore throat and headache), the closest identification I can come to is vaginal herpes, and I have absolutely no idea how I could have contracted them, or what medication/treatment is needed for them and if I need to involve my mother(who will probably not believe me). I have a bump on my left inner labia since like a week. It showed up quite suddenly and it’s now the size of a pea. It doesn’t hurt or itch in any way, not even when I pee or when I touch or squeeze it. I don’t feel it basically. It’s round, the same colour as my skin and it doesn’t appear to have a head. I don’t have any other symptoms either. I’m still scared though because other sites say it could be cancer. It’s not an std since I haven’t had sex in 2 years. Should I see a doctor?

What do mean by “dry” when you say in previous responses to keep the area “clean and dry.” “Dry” seems fairly impossible, and maybe harmful even. “Free from excess moisture” would be possible. Is that what is actually meant? Or should steps be taken to make the area unnaturally dry?

Just “Free from excess moisture.” Complete dryness would be harmful, as you understand.

Excess moisture and secretions make grounds for the growth of bugs there and may promote pimples.

Excess moisture may be avoided by washing the area well with water on a daily basis, wearing loose cotton lowers.

I noticed about six or so bumps over my Fordyce spots on my labia on the right side only. They popped (I know I should have left them alone), but I do not think that they are genital herpes. They all had sort of a white head and what came out was a somewhat thin white/yellowish/greenish pus. I have no way to get to the doctor right now for a swab test, so I was just wondering your opinion. I have been tested for all of the usual STDs, but not hsv-2. I do not notice any itching or tingling like with herpes sores.

I have a Whitehead pimple on the inner lip (mucosa) and I popped it stupidly a week or so ago. I treated it with antibiotic cream immediately and keep the area clean. I do workout a lot, but recently I’ve been making an effort to shower immediately after my workouts. The Whitehead seemed to go away, and then 2 more showed up (not at the same time, though) a day or so after. One has disappeared already, but the other is still there. These are very small pimples with Whitehead’s, and they are not painful unless they are irritated. I’ve been using summers eve feminine wash to help maintain the right ph balance, but is this just making it worse? Should I just leave them alone? Keep applying antibiotic cream?

Freaking out, i went and searched for the sensitive area again but couldn’t find it. I did get a pimple some months back in that area. Also i’m at the end of my menses.
I’m 28 and have only been with my husband. Please please advise.

It could have been a pimple/ cyst or some growth in your lower vaginal wall. Doesn’t sound scary. You may relax, unless you see some other symptom.

I have a pimple which seems to be infected in the inner labia. I burns a lot, recently I started putting yeast infection cream on it to help ease the burning and it works. Do you think this could cure my pimple?

Try warm compress over it. This may help it drain out pus, if any.

Yeast creams usually do not work. An antibiotic ointment would be better to be used, instead.

Hello, I am 32 years old and have HSV-2. I am sexually active. About 7 1/2 to 8 years ago (before I contracted HSV) I got pregnant with my first child. Shortly after I found out I was pregnant I started noticing quite a few of these tiny skin color bumps on the left side inner lip surrounding the vaginal hole (I believe it’s the labia or vulva) that would turn white when I pinched them. Most of them popped but one of them was really deep and didn’t ever pop. It’s almost in the exact spot where my herpes outbreaks occure. It has now been there for about 8 years and it grew quite big. Bigger than a pea size. It was more like the size of two or three peas put together. Through these 8 years that it has been there, sometimes I will try to squeeze it and nothing would ever come out but it would get painful for about a week after I’d squeeze it. This bump has really been bothering me and it is quite embarrassing on top of having to tell my partners that I have HSV-2. Anyway, about a week ago I started squeezing it again and again it got really painful. Painful to the point that it felt like a herpes outbreak but different. I usually always get nerve pain when I have a herpes outbreak, but this time there was no nerve pain. The day before yesterday I noticed that it quit hurting. Last night when I got in the shower I started feeling a little discomfort again where that bump was when I started washing in that area. So, I squeezed it again and this time it erupted. A BUNCH of yellowish white substance that resembled ricotta or cottage cheese came out of it. It was almost like watching one of those videos where doctors squeeze out the stuff that comes out of cystic acne. Now that the bump is gone, there is pain in that area again. I’m thinking it must have left a hole where the stuff came out. Anyway, I tried to describe this as best as I can. I’m just wondering if you know what this thing could have been and if you can give me some advice on what I should do. There are also more of the tiny bumps on the left and right sides of the inner lips. Some of them pop, most of them won’t. When the tiny ones do pop, this stringy white stuff comes out of them. What should I do? Mine won’t resolve on their own. They just won’t go away at all unless I pop them. If I don’t pop them, they stay for years and grow large in size. I don’t want the tiny ones to turn into huge ones like that one that was there for almost 8 years and finally popped last night. Please help. Any advice would be much appreciated. I keep up with my hygiene every day and keep that area clean. And the only time I eat junk food is when I’m on my period. Other than that, I eat healthy home cooked meals.

Since you’re sure these are Herpes lesions, its’ better to take anti viral pills during an outbreak. This would reduce the severity.

These lesions may be removed by laser ablation, electric cauterize techniques. This is preferably done when the lesions are small in size.

Hi, I’m at the end of my period and went to take a shower when I felt a discomfort. When I checked what it was it looked like a bump inside the labia minora. I’m 35 and never had this before. It doesn’t hurt when I urinate but when I wipe after using the bathroom it feels tender from wiping. I’m married and haven’t had sex in a month and I never had an STD.

    Hello,
I’ve had a few red bumps on outer labia that has a white head kind of sticking upward from it. They have been there for weeks! They haven’t popped or anything I don’t think and none of them hurt but it is not pleasant to look at. Could this be an STD?!

I had a small pimple like bump on my right inner labia, after a hot shower it did pop and produced what looked like the white head of a pimple. I’m 24 and not sexually active.

I had one bump on my inner labia. I noticed it about a week and a half before my estimated menstrual start date. It was only red, painful only a little if I touched it. As time passed (still before my estimated period) it became more painful and then another bump formed. I used warm compresses often, but they remained painful, inflamed, and bright red. The day before my estimated period, as I was urinating it began to sting on the pimples. I looked and they had busted open and were leaking blood from a hole at each of the bumps. Were these pimples or something else? I’m in a monogamous marriage.

Likely to be pimples. However, if you notice more of these, further evaluation may be needed.

Hi, about a week ago I discovered a bump on my labia minora just beneath the skin. It hasn’t changed in size but is more noticeable and sometimes causes discomfort or hurts when I walk. What might this be?
