Fever and Blisters – Possibility of Shingles

Q: I’m a 47 year old white male. I’ve been experiencing cold chills, nausea and pressure on my head. Three days later now my entire body has spots like early chicken pox. I’ve already had chicken pox when I was 7. I also feel light headed.

Your clinical picture is most commonly seen in the varicella induced illnesses. These include chicken pox and herpes zoster (shingles).

Now, you need to take care of the skin lesions just in case they rupture. Take adequate amount of water. If you feel burning in the area of spots, then inform your physician. At an early stage of herpes zoster, antiviral medication such as acyclovir may shorten the course of disease.

Hi, I’m 55 years old and I have shingles like Robert, but I had them for almost 3 years now. They do recur and I take antiviral medicines.

Is there really no way to remove the virus from my body totally? Is there no new drug out there to permanently cure shingles?

Herpes virus stays permanently in nerve ganglia. After a person has had chicken pox, the virus remains inactive in the body, but years later may reactivate in the nerves and cause shingles.
