Managing a Vaginal Zit

Zits are common in moist areas, where skin contains plenty of glands. Armpits, groins and vagina are some places where acne eruptions are very common.

What Is a Vaginal Zit?

There are plenty of lubricating glands in the vagina. If the duct of any gland gets blocked, a cystic swelling is formed. This is called a vaginal zit or a pimple.

Blockage occurs when the secretions are excessive or there is plenty of tissue debris lying in the area due to inadequate washing.

You may read about 3 simple and quick methods to treat them yourself.

Zit May Get Infected

Zits are common and usually resolve on their own. However, sometimes we may inadvertently infect them.

This happens commonly when we fiddle with them, that is, try to squeeze or pop them. The bacteria from our hands get transfered to it.

Or else, due to continuous rubbing of the bump  all the day with an underwear, they get traumatized and infected.

Zits are fertile grounds for the growth of bacteria. Bacteria grows inside and pus starts getting accumulated.

As the tension increases inside the zit, it becomes more and more painful.

Care and Management

  • Wash the area adequately with water on a daily basis. No soaps or gels are required.
  • Keep the area moisture free.
  • Wear soft and loose cotton underwears only. They absorb the moisture that may accumulate in the area. Also, soft cotton fabric gives minimum friction.
  • Drink plenty of water. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. This would keep your skin healthy.
  • Avoid fatty or greasy foodstuffs. They make your prone to zit formation.
  • If you have a pimple, try doing warm compress over it to relieve pain and soften it. This technique may also be helpful to drain the zit.
  • Apply a topical antibiotic cream over the infected zit at least thrice a day for a week.

Hello. I have a bump that is like a pimple, on the pink part of my vagina away from the hair. It’s on my labia, on the right, a little below the clitoris. It seems to be a pimple, but I can’t quite tell. I have never been sexually active, or been touched in that region by another person. Can I have some insight to what this is?
Also, it does not hurt if I leave it alone, it only hurts when, or after I squeeze it.

This is very likely to be a pimple.

Do not squeeze or pop it. It is likely to subside on its own with time.

All you need to do is to keep the area clean and dry. Wash down there daily with ample plain water. No soap is required.

Where loose cotton underwear to avoid friction while moving.

The pimple is likely to go away on its own. If it grows in size or becomes painful, you may start applying mupirocin (bactroban) ointment over it, twice a day for a week.

Most of such pimples resolve on their own with the commencement of menstrual flow. You may wait for a day or two.

However, if it increases in pain or size, you’ll need to start some antibiotic.

Are you sexually active? If yes, you need to get yourself examined by a doctor to rule out the presence of any STD.

If not, these may be simple pimples. Start applying a topical antibiotic cream, like mupirocin, over it. Apply it twice daily for 3 to 5 days.

Apart from this, keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwear to avoid friction over the pimples. Take care not to injure those pimples.

Hi, I have 2 cuts/lumps on either side of my labia. They itch a little and hurt slightly if I scratch them. I am 15 and have never had sex before. However, my boyfriend and I have touched each others genitals. They started a week or so before my period which is usual, they then clear up during my period and go, but this time they have done the same but have come back after my period. I’m really scared they could be because of an STD or whether it’s an yeast infection. Please help.

These lumps are likely to be vaginal pimples. May be you hurt them while touching during your private moments.

These lumps sound infected. Keep the genital area clean by washing it daily while bathing. Dab dry it with a clean towel and apply mupirocin ointment over the lumps twice a day.

Wear loose cotton undergarments and avoid any touching down there till the lumps get alright.

Hi! I’m 14 and I have 2 bumps on my private area, one is higher up, so close to the outer line where pubic hair grow. It’s been there for about a year, it’s really hard and hardly hurts, it’s skin colored. I went to my doctor for it and but my doctor said it’s nothing and if it hurts or grows come back, but recently I got another bump, this one is on my vagina lip, it hurts a lot, around the same time I got this my lower stomach has been hurting and when I pee it hurts. I haven’t had sex before but recently I had oral sex.

The one that is skin colored near your pubic hair may be an ingrown hair. You need not do anything for this lesion. As your doctor said, intervention is required only if it pains, itches or shows any other symptom.

For the other two lesions, start applying a topical antibiotic cream, like mupirocin (bactroban) over it. Apply it thrice daily for a week.

Both these lesions are likely to be pimples.

If the pain is so excruciating, it indicates that we’re not able to drain out pus at home. You may need a surgical drainage.

Better to see a doctor for this. As soon as the pus is drained, you’ll get relief. That’s also essential to prevent the spread of infections.

You may be given oral antibiotics at this stage to arrest infection.

    Hello Dr. Buddy

I usually get pimples inside on my vagina near my clitoris and on the lips during my period, before and after. Recently I’ve had a very stubborn set of pimples, one on the outer part of my vagina an inch away from the part of the opening where the clitoris is, the other near my clit and a small one I JUST found on the labia. I’m not sexually active. I try to keep clean as much as possible. I know you’re not supposed to pop them but they give me so much anxiety. I’ve heard you can get herpes from toilet seats, is it true? I’ve had to use public restrooms before and I am so worried I have something bad. I also have pain in my vagina and lower left side. I have U.C and wonder if sometimes when I have accidents, could that play a role? I am so afraid and humiliated.

I was formerly taking prednisone for my UC though, and Tramadol. Are those bad for pimples or is it possible I wasn’t as clean as i thought? I mean I bathe often. I am having a UC flare up right now though…and I cannot help but wonder if it could have something to do with it as, I have humiliatingly admitted, it’s caused me to have a few accidents.

I’m also not on my period. I tried patting the tissue on the upper and lower part as well as where the pimple was to see where the blood was coming from however there was no blood on the tissue. I had a larger, painful bump by my clitoris for a few days. I took a bath this morning and it popped. However, it feels better but there is a large hole left. I can almost fit the end of a q-tip in it. Please advise. I am terrified.

This hole is likely to gradually close as the healing process takes over. Just keep the area clean.

Hi, a bump like pimple is on the lips of my virgina. It appeared 5 months ago a few days before my period. I am sexually active but my partner is clean and so was I. It comes and goes, it’s itchy at times. Te first time I popped it, little blood and yellow stuff came out then after that it healed, however it is back again. I have notice it only appears a day after being active. What could it be? My partner has no history of STIs and neither do I

Likely to be an infected pimple. This time, try drain it by repeated warm compress. Also, apply an antibiotic ointment (bacitracin/ bactroban) over it, thrice daily.

You may try warm compress over it to help in drain gently. This would alleviate the pain as well.

If its difficult to drain or it grows in size, you may need to take antibiotics for this.

I have a small white dot, about the size of a pinhead, attached to the right side of my clit. I‘m not sexually active, though I do masturbate sometimes. I’ve had it for maybe 3 1/2 years at the most, but I’ve had it for a while. It’s slowly getting bigger over time. It had never hurted unless I try to squeeze it. Idk what to do about it. Should I pop it with a sterile pin? Should I leave it alone even though it’s been there for 2+ years?
I should probably add that it has nothing to do with my period. I am EXTREMELY irregular and only have my period at most 2 times a year. I’m not quite 20 yet so the doctor (never been to a gyno) said that i shouldn’t worry about it until I’m over 21.

These are more likely to be infected razor bumps. You need to apply antibiotic ointment over them. Avoid friction over these bumps. Wearing lose lowers would help.

Likely to be a clogged gland that has got infected. You may try warm compress over it to help it drain. Any antibiotic cream may be applied over it, thrice daily.

Hello! I’ve recently just noticed (after masturbation) that there was a random white spot on my clitoris (a little to the right side). Like, right there beside the “bulb” like shape of the clitoris.
It has a slight bump. I thought it was a toilet paper speck at first, but found that it would not come out. It’s not too painful, just highly sensitive.
Will this go away on its own? Or should I get it checked out? It seems like a pimple but I’m not too sure.
    Thank you!

Update: I was able to roll the white thing out of its pocket in the shower. I was so relieved!

But now it’s back. I tried to take it out again, but it’s much more stubborn this time. I think I may have cut a part of my clitoris, as a part of the flesh is redder and sore. It hurts a lot to touch now and sit.

Sorry to be a bother, but any suggestions to prevent this repeating or take it out? I always used the same toilet paper and wiped the same way, it’s the first time this happened.
(P.S. Hiw long until a cut clitoris heals?)
        Thank you for your time.

Clitoris has a rich blood supply and would heal very quickly. Just avoid friction over the affected area.

Getting recurrent pimples may be related to your diet. You may read here about care.
