Pimple Complicates on Shaving

Q: I have a pimple around my vaginal lip area, where I usually shave. I woke up and noticed it. I tried popping it but it became bigger. And then it went down again. A little pus came out at first, but when I popped it again, blood came out. I see it swollen. Should I leave it alone ? Is that normal? Is it the shaver that isn’t working for me correctly?

Looks like your pimple has got infected. Probably, it was there when you shaved the area. It may have got hurt and inflamed.

As you manipulated it further with your hands, it got infected.

It is advisable never to pop or squeeze a pimple. Read more on how to take care of an infected pimple.

Management

Now, you may leave it as such and let it dry. Keep the area clean and dry.

Observe the pimple closely. If you feel it is not healing or drying up, you may start applying some topical antibiotic (like mupirocin) on it. Apply the medication 3 times daily for around a week. It should get alright.

Also, avoid shaving the area till the wound gets healed completely.

Shavers may sometimes cause trouble. This is when their blades are not sharp enough and they have to pull a hair. Pulled hair usually get infected.

However, if you observe any of the following signs, you may visit a doctor for examination:

  • Fever
  • More pus from the wound even after using the topical medication.
  • Redness and pain in the area.
  • Any hardness developing around the pimple.

The pimple is likely to be infected. You may start applying mupirocin (bactroban) cream over it, thrice daily.

Also, keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose cotton underwear to let the region be free of moisture. Change pads frequently.

You may start applying a topical antibiotic, like mupirocin, over the pimples. Apply it thrice a day for a week.

One reason for recurrence may be that the pus inside the pimples has been touching the surrounding skin surface, infecting it, and leading to more pimples. Take care that the area is clean and dry. The pus inside the pimples does not spill over the surrounding area.

Since you are sexually active, regular screening for STDs is a must, even if you use protection.

I’m 17 and I have a small bump on the right vaginal lip; it’s been there for about a month now; it’s not even a pimple; you know those little bumps you can get on your face but you cant pop it? Well it’s basically that.. but in my downstairs area. and of course, I tired to pop it, and all that comes out is some type of water substance. And it becomes red and it starts burning. I don’t know what to do. I’m just really worried it’s something bad.

Let us know if you’re sexually active. This may change the diagnosis.

For now, this looks like an infected pimple. Start applying antibiotic cream (mupirocin/ bactroban) over it thrice daily. Keep the area clean. Avoid friction over the bump while walking.
