What Causes White Vaginal Discharge?

It is very common for a woman to get white vaginal discharge during her reproductive years.

Such a discharge is not always pathological. It is, therefore, very important to know the various causes of getting a white discharge.

The causes include infections, medical conditions and normal variations.

Let us first begin with the description of a normal vaginal discharge.

Normal Vaginal Discharge

A healthy vagina secretes some secretions to keep itself moist, well lubricated and free from infections. This is basically mucus for the region. The normal vaginal pH is slightly acidic, around 4.5. It prevents the growth of unwanted pathogens in the area and keeps the vaginal canal free from infections.

Characteristics of a Normal Vaginal Discharge

Normal secretions of this area are clear and thin in consistency. However, they may be slightly white. On drying up on a cloth, it may appear yellowish in color.

The appearance of this discharge may change in different phases of menstrual cycle, sexual arousal, emotional stress, nutritional deficiencies and by influence of hormonal pills. Excessive vaginal discharge is medically called leukorrhea.

Vaginal Discharge During Different Phases of Menstrual Cycle

The vaginal discharge becomes white and a bit thick, both during the beginning and end of the cycle. This is normal. During ovulation, women observe that the discharge is somewhat stretchy.

After Exercises

After any strenuous work, like prolonged standing, you may note more wetness down there. This is because the secretions are excessive, thin and watery in consistency.

Normal secretions are not itchy or painful in any way. They are not foul smelling, though your secretions may have some smell specific to you.

During Pregnancy

A normal variation in vaginal discharge occurs during pregnancy. The discharge becomes thick and milky (egg white).

As you approach labor, the discharge may become more in quantity.

In pregnancy, a protective mucous plug is formed outside the cervical opening. This plug closes the opening and doesn’t allow any pathogen to enter inside. Hence, it has a protective role.

This excessive white discharge is due to the constant renewal of this plug, as it flows from cervix, through the vaginal canal, carrying with it shed cells and other secretions.

Normal discharge is not itchy. If you notice any itch, pain, burning or change in color of the discharge, report to your doctor immediately.

During or After Sex

Secretions are increased due to sexual arousal. They aid in the act that follow. Such secretions are clear and slippery. They are excessive, enough to wet you, but absolutely not itchy and odorless.

Some females may have a female ejaculate after sex. This is watery, just like urine.

If the act is traumatic, you may have some reddish discharge due to blood. However, if you note any abnormal discharge, which is foul smelling, itchy or of any other color (brown, yellow or green), see your doctor to rule out infections.

Most of the infective conditions will have associated symptoms with it. You may have itch, burning, pain, redness or swollen vulva or foul smelling abnormal discharge.

Candidiasis

The commonest vaginal infection, caused by a fungus (yeast).

There is white vaginal discharge which is thick, may be curdy or even chunky, resembling cottage cheese. Discharge increases if the infection is left unattended.

There is a lot of itch. The vulvar region may be swollen and red in appearance. Clumpy discharge may be present there. Read more on candidiasis of genital area.

Pasty and Cloudy White Vaginal Discharge

Some women complain of having such a discharge around ovulation.

All you have to see is that whether the discharge is associated with other symptoms like itching, burning, redness, foul smell or not.

If not, it may be a normal variation.

Hello, last Wednesday I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend of 6 yrs and around Friday or Saturday I noticed I was having a lot of discharge, which isn’t normal for me. The discharge is white, thick, really thick and lumpy. No out of the ordinary smell, but it isn’t my normal scent. Today it has increased and I’m noticing some redness and a slight itchy feeling. Could this just be a yeast infection or could be be something more? Oh I’m also having lower abdominal pains which started the same time as the white discharge.

Sometimes it is a little bit of white discharge and sometimes during the day it is a lot of discharge to where i have to clean myself. It is not clumpy but more of liquid white substance that seems off

If it’s itchy or red down there, infections need to be ruled out. If not, this may be excess of normal vaginal secretions.

This may happen due to excessive sexual stimulations or long standing hours during the day.

I’m 15 years old and I’ve had a lot of vaginal discharge ever since I started my period which was at the age of 10. I used to wear pads everyday, but I felt disgusting. My family started asking why I was always on my period so to say. So I stopped wearing the pads. It leaves clear mucus looking discharge in my undies, it’s extremely embarrassing when someone washes my clothes or sees my undies. I try to take good care of my vagina but it seems all it wants to do is go against me. It starts getting a weird smell after the day is over at school. I constantly have to worry about leaking in a way, where the wetness goes through my undies and through my jeans. It’s a complete horror story. I’m 15, I have a boyfriend of 2 years now and we’re growing up and I don’t think it’s wrong that he is starting to get into that stuff. I just wouldn’t be comfortable with myself and having sex until I get this understood and under control. I want to be able to do things with him, I turn 16 in a few days. I don’t want to take my pants off and for him to see that because I know he has no idea what that is and I don’t want him to be grossed out or anything. And I’m almost a hundred percent positive none of my friends have this problem. My doctor just recently prescribed me birth control. I haven’t taken it yet but I’ll start the day I start my period. She prescribed birth control because I get really bad cramps on my period and I get a heavy flow. I actually have to miss school some days because medicine just simply won’t work and I can’t move. I just sit there and cry. Anyway, I really want to be and feel normal! How do I help at least lighten it, is it normal? Help me please! I’m 15 I’m 120 pounds and I am 5’4 I don’t really know if that’s important but yeah!

Your discharge doesn’t sound to be pathological, that is infectious. It is due to some physiological or emotional reason.

The first among the probable reasons is being sexually stimulated. Thinking about sex or watching pictures or movies related to it can stimulate the glands down there and lead to excessive secretions.

In such cases, you need to cut down on sex stimulating stuff, or else go for real sex.

Secretions may be more if you are very thin or malnourished.

Let us know if you have any redness or itching down there.

Some females get a slight pinkish mucoid discharge after conception. However, this is not a confirmatory sign. You may go for a urine pregnancy testing to confirm your result.

OK so me and my boyfriend of 4 years have been actively having sex. And we happened to have sex Tuesday and Wednesday which Wednesday was three days before I ovulated. We didn’t use protection but he’s for sure he didn’t come in me. He pulled out I want to say 30 seconds before it came out. But Sunday, which is a day after I ovulate, I’m Gavin really back lower back pains. I’m also having really bad stomach aches that kept me up last night, a stuffy nose, and a slight head ache. It also is uncomfortable to stand because my back immediately aches and feels like my stomach is being pulled down when I stand. My next cycle isn’t until 13 more days. I haven’t eaten all yesterday because I’m really not hungry and I haven’t eaten today either. I’m having a whitish clear discharge as well. I’m 19, about to turn 20, but I’m actually not ready for a baby just yet if I am I would be ok financially but I just would like to know ahead of time so I can plan out what I’m going to do. Please help me as soon as you can.

It is suggested you go for a home pregnancy test, the one that tests urine for the pregnancy hormone.

It’s difficult to comment just on the basis of your symptoms. These could be due to mild viral infection or may be pregnancy.

This may happen if the penetration is very deep.

It may also happen during 12th to 16th day of your cycle, when the cervix is engorged and a bit swelled. This is normal.

So, all my life I’ve had this discharge. It does not smell and it changes color and consistency. Sometimes it’s white as chalk, yellow as butter and brownish. I tend to itch on the top outside part of my vagina (the skin) and not at the vulva. I don’t get any blisters or redness. I recently began to experience some burning especially during the first couple days of my period and I became worried. This lasted a couple weeks, doesn’t hurt when I pee.

I went to the Gynecologist and she did a swab, R+m and she said my results are fine. That there isn’t any sign of urinary tract or yeast infections. So my question I , why is my discharge thick and clumpy, shouldn’t it be thin and transparent? And why do I itch at the vagina skin often?

May be your symptoms are due to some pH disturbances down there.

To restore the pH of the region and make the vagina healthy, you need to keep it clean by daily washing.

Wash lower down with plain water only, no soap or gel is required. Be it moisturized with a vaginal emollient.

Include curd in your diet on a regular basis. This would help restoring the pH down there,

My urine is also a bright yellow and smells very strong. It’s not a pleasant smell. I put a tampon in to see if the smell is coming not only from my urine but my vagina too and the Tampon had the same smell to it as my urine. I have a lot of pelvic pain with it too. Do you have any idea what this could be? Thank you.

A couple weeks after treatment, I noticed my discharge was off. My follow up with the dr she noticed the discharge too. Std test and yeast infection test came back negative. Took medicine for a yeast infection anyways and discharge is still the same. It’s very white and creamy and can turn clumpy at times. No odor, no itching, nothing. Just confused, before my treatment I was always clear to whitish at times. Now I’m constantly very white and creamy. Any idea?

Your vagina is likely to be secreting this way because is it inflamed due to infections, you already know. This is likely to be a normal inflammatory response of the vagina.

It may take time for it to heal. The discharge would gradually subside with time.

    Hello,
I’ve been having strange discharge for about 6 months after sex with a new man. It started with slight inching up inside and I didn’t think much about it. Next day the discharge seemed to be irrtating the vulva area. Red, irritated and inflamed. I’ve been tested for everything, including all STDs, yeast, strep B, BV and also HSV2 (4 months after symptoms), which was my worst fear, everything negative. I’ve taken Diflucan, Flagyl, Ciproxin, and now lastly Doycycline as a last resort with the hope that’s it Lactobacilliosis. Constant discharge that is pasty, white and then sometimes more watery that’s obviously irritating my vulva and tissues down there. Some days worse than others. No smell, just reddish irritation and a prickly feeling as if the discharge is acidic. Also sour to taste. No pain, or flu sysmtoms have ever existed with this. Any idea what this could be? I don’t use any perfumes, douche, not even tampons. Only cotton underwear. I’ve never in my life had any issues with my vagina. Any idea what this could be?

You already seem to have taken appropriate antibiotics for most of the vaginal infections. Just complete their courses, no more required, since STI are already ruled out.

This may also be a pH issue. Keep the area clean down there. Avoid using soaps or gels there, as they wash off the secretions and ender the place dry. Also, pH gets disturbed.

Just plain water cleaning is adequate. You may also add some probiotics in your daily diet.

It also might be helpful to add that the initial systems started 2 weeks after our last intercourse, one week after he did oral on me and 2 days after being very stressed and upset about something in my life to the point of not being able to sleep or eat much. I’ve been chronically stressed and upset since then, although not as bad. Mainly because of this vagjnal problem. We only had sex 3 times and I have not had any sexual contact with him or anyone else since these symptoms began 6 months ago. We were together for 8 months before having sex, although I would do oral on him during that time. He also touched me a few times down there, and I did feel a little itchy and a SLIGHT fishy smell right after that. I thought maybe it was just from dirt or bacteria on hands and it would get better after my period. It was a very slight smell after shower, but it just wasn’t normal for me. But I have no smell now. Just the pasty thick/sometimes watery discharge with irritation and inflammation. Also, when we kissed and his saliva would get on my mouth or cheeks, I didn’t like the smell. Like maybe bacteria or not matching chemistry. Just trying to give as many details as possible for accurate diagnosis, and to maybe help anyone else reading this. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Doctor, thank you very much for your answer. Even with the negative HSV2 test results, I still keep panicking. I get myself all worked up and almost have a panic attack thinking about it. I just don’t know what else it could be. I’ve never had anything down there before. Does this sound like it could be that based on my symptoms? I had a HerpesSelect type specific test four months after symptoms began, with HSV1 result around 45 (I already knew that since I get cold sores), and HSV2 results negative <.09. What else do you think this could be? I can’t relax and am thinking/freaking out about this every day.

Herpes is the commonest to fit into such symptoms.

You may first check your pH down there with a pH strip.

This is an infection. See a gyne at the earliest. Need to be put on appropriate antibiotics.

my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex, and later I started having whitish vaginal discharge, which was itchy and redness down there, then few days later I felt pregnant, I saw pinkish spotting which became heavy about 3 day and the fourth day when I went to ease myself, I felt two little lumps falling out from my vagina into the WC but could not see what it was, could it be miscarriage or something else and after that the discharge still continue despite treatment.

Thanks for the advice, I will do otherwise and if anything I will come back. Another question, my fiance hasn’t yet started feeling the itching, so will it be alright for him to take the treatment or it just me who has to?

Me and my boyfriend have been having unprotected sex after my last cycle. According to my app that helps keep track of the days that I’m fertile we have been on top of things if you know what I mean. But what is so weird about it is for the past 3 months or so my period has been normal. And after my last cycle when we would have sex I would always have this white creamy stuff come out on him and more when I’m On top. I have no burning or itching. Keep in mind I’m trying to get pregnant and I’ve never experienced this before with another man. I’m 33 and don’t have any kids.could this mean that I’m now ovulating like I’m supposed to? Please help

Hello, was going to ask about a white creamy discharge that just happened recently. It has been itchy for a few days which has never happened but I have no idea if it’s a certain soap I’m using or the material of my underwear. I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for almost a year and we do have unprocted sex. I recently had some blood work done and it came back std free. My birth control is the Nexplanon implant but it did just expire fall of 2018 so I have an appointment to get it replaced as well as for my gynecologist. I haven’t had any periods with this birth control eitther. I hope this is eneough info to help me out.
