Vaginal Skin Tags

It is very rare to have a skin tag in the vaginal area. If you have any growth looking like a skin tag, you need to differentiate it from other similar lesions like a wart.

What Do Skin Tag Look Like and What Causes Them?

Skin tags are smooth pendular growths arising from the skin. They are small, painless, symptomless and attached to the surface via a small stalk. The growth is always skin colored.

Skin tags occur in parts of the body that are dry and experience a lot of friction throughout the day. Constant rubbing of two skin surfaces against each other is likely to give such growth.

Commonly, they are found in underarm area, groin region, neck, perineum (space between the vaginal and the anal opening)  or under the breast.

Since the vaginal area is quite moist, they are unlikely to be found there. However, constant rubbing of undergarments with the labia may sometimes cause them.

What to Do If You Notice a Skin Tag in the Vaginal Area?

A skin tag in this area needs to be differentiated from other growths commoner in the region.

Wart Vs Skin Tag

A wart has a rough and irregular surface, whereas a skin tag is a smooth and pendular growth. Skin tags are always symptomless, unless pulled or traumatized. Warts may be without symptoms or itchy.

Warts are caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). So, if you see a tag like lesion in your genitals, it is desirable to go for a biopsy.

Irritation Polyp

Constant rubbing of labia against each other while walking or due to tight clothes may give rise to polyp shaped growths there. These resemble tags in their appearance.

During Pregnancy

A woman may notice more of skin tags during her pregnancy. During this phase, she may see them over the genital area also.

Vaginal Skin Tag Removal

First get your tag diagnosed, you need to be sure if it is a simple tag or a wart.

Tags need no treatment unless they bother you. Sometimes a tag would bleed/ pain on being pulled while changing clothes or during intercourse.

In such cases, you may go to your gyne for tag removal. Doctor usually cut them off or freeze them. The procedure is simple and painless. It takes just a few minutes.

Medical Advice (Q&As) on “Vaginal Skin Tags or Warts

You need to see a gyne for check up. Examination would reveal whether it is a wart or a simple skin tag.

A biopsy may be taken to rule out the presence of HPV/ herpes.

Warts are removed by excision or by freezing them off. The procedures are simple and performed in the outpatient setting.

Good day doctors! I just had delivered my 30 week son on the 2nd day this month via emergency Cesarean Section. He is doing pretty good and still thriving in the NICU. My Ob-Gyn had cauterized my genital warts the same day right after my delivery. But I have noticed that there are still some left, not in my vagina but on the upper lip of my labia. I think she didn’t notice it and she just focused on those warts inside. I am afraid that these warts might spread all over again. I went to see my Ob-Gyn and told her that I’ve still got some warts left. She gave me a strong dosage of vitamins that I will have to take in one month. She said it will likely help because the warts left are not too many and just very small. Though, I am still afraid. Can I use any cream that I may top over it? Is there any highly recommended cream for genital warts? Please answer. Thank you doctors!

      There no cream for this.

Warts may be removed by cauterization or by applying chemicals over it. You need to go to a doctor for this. Two or more sitting would be required.

Hey I noticed so something in my vagina during my pregnancy in 2014 and I was 8 months old. I went to the clinic and they said are warts, and went to the hospital they checked me and say to me I must give birth first before they can remove them, but now I feel pain during sexual intercourse. My question is can you doctors tell me if this is skin tag or warts as and what to do?

Do they itch or burn? Can you describe them, are they big or tiny, single or in clusters, spreading or not?

Hello! I have been feeling what a first seemed to be small pimples near the hole to my vagina. I took a mirror to it and see a cluster of what seems to be skin tags or not very hard pimples. At first you couldn’t really see them unless I spread the skin apart but now I’ve messed with them and the almost look white at first they were skin colored. I’m very scared this may be genital warts and have been up all night.

I am currently 35 weeks and a day pregnant. About a week ago I noticed these skin colored bumps on my vagina . They aren’t really hard but not really soft either and tgere are quite a few of them .They don’t bother me at all . I looked it up and multiple things came up but hpv/ genital warts was what worried me. Wouldn’t it show up on the std test my Dr did at my 3 month appointment ?

And I also got tested before I was pregnant as well as at my 12 week appointment. They’re just now showing up. I’m not sure exactly how many there are but it’s quite a few

These may be HPV warts. Can’t be sure unless they’re ruled out on examination.

You need to see your gyne.

I’m 31 weeks pregnant had what I think was a skin tag because is was a single, tiny, hanging skin on the fold of my genital. I used apple cider vinegar and it has gone away. Now I’ve just noticed some bumps on the inside of my vagina which looks like it could be skin tags but I’m not sure. They are not flat and some are pink (color of inside my vagina) and some are darker (black color). Could pregnant women get both skin tags and warts at the same time? Could this be warts in my vagina?

These may be warts in the vagina. You may show them to your gyne in the next visit. Removal may be considered before you deliver the baby.

How long does it take for hpv warts to show up ? I’m been with the same person for 6 and a half months , never had an std, and got tested 5 months ago also for stds ( my 12 week appt ) and now I’m 35 weeks and these bumps aren’t painful or anything but everything I’ve researched says hpv. If he cheated 3 months ago could I have gotten it then ?

Also, why are these suddenly showing up?

Are you sexually active? If yes, better get these examined by a doctor. These are likely to be viral warts.

Since you don’t have any itch or pain, it’s unlikely to be thrush or any other infection.

May be a wart. Any burning sensation over it? Do you see redness around the polyp base? Are they increasing in number?

Are you sexually active? If yes, better to get it examined. May be a wart.

If not, it’s likely to be a harmless skin tag. You may leave it as such. It’s likely to shrink and disappear on its own with time.

There are no specific reasons why they occur. However, excess rubbing of skin surfaces there is one factor that has been attributed.

    I’m 71 years old
I have a vaginal itch (intense) for years
My doctor (years ago) said he didn’t know, but never referred me to another doctor
Made an appointment – a gynecologist told me its lichen sclerosis (2012)
Anyway I looked in a mirror today, was stunned to see two growth looking things on outside of vagina on each side touching each other, but hanging down, soft
    This scared and worries me
I have an appt the 25 of this month

Don’t worry. This is unlikely to be anything serious.

What medications are you taking for lichen?

Likely to be mucosal tags, hanging out from the lower portion of the vaginal wall. Needs to be seen by a gyne for exact diagnosis.

Likely to be a tag, though exact diagnosis requires a physical exam. You may leave it as such if it doesn’t bother you.

However, if you want to remove it, it’s better to see a surgeon and get it excised out surgically.
