Vaginal Gas

The expulsion of air from the vaginal opening is called vaginal fart or vaginal gas. It may also be referred as vaginal wind.

Having vaginal wind is very common. Every second woman may get it, especially after she has kids.

The problem is rare in virgins. It occurs in women who have one or more kids. Most women get it after sexual intercourse, masturbation, after coughing or heavy exercises.

The Nature of Gas

The gas is usually odorless, as it has nothing to do with the fecal matter. It may comes out painlessly with a slight sound associated with it.

There is no pain, no soiling of underwear and no chances of infection with vaginal farting.

Why Does This Flatulence Occur?

After you have kids, your vaginal canal somewhat broadens up. It loses its tightness. This happens chiefly because the canal expands itself a great deal during child birth. Its walls expands.

During strenuous exercises or sexual intercourse or any other activity like coughing, these loose walls expand and some air is pulled from outside into the vaginal canal.

When the walls collapse back, this air is expelled out as a fart.

The gas is not infected, not smelly at all. There is nothing worrisome about having a vaginal fart.

How to Manage This Condition?

The only conservative way to treat the condition is doing exercises that strengthen the pelvic musculature. These include Kegels exercises.

How to Do Kegels Exercises?

When you’re peeing, clench (without your hands) your muscles to stop the flow of urine for about four seconds. Then release those same muscles to let the urine flow again. These are your pelvic floor muscles; these are the muscles you’ll be exercising when you do Kegels.

If you want to check and make sure that you’re using the right muscles, put a finger or two into your vagina. Tighten the muscles. If you can feel your fingers being squeezed (even just a little), then you’ve located the right muscles.

About five to ten times a day, repeat the Kegels ten times per session.
It can take up to 8 – 10 weeks to notice improvement, and there will most certainly be improvement.

Like any kind of weight lifting or muscle building exercises, Kegels take time to make a difference. (Adding a vaginal barbell to your regular Kegel exercise routine can help. They are available at specialty stores that carry sex toys or sexual enhancement items.)

If the condition is too severe, surgical repair may be done. Here, the muscles down there are pulled and stitched so as to tighten them.

Vaginal Gas That is Smelly

If you get vaginal farts which are smelly, like those from the anus, get yourself examined.

You may be having some fistula, that is leakage point in the wall of the vagina, connecting it to the anal canal.

Such conditions occur after surgeries, child birth or injuries.

Early detection and treatment is essential to prevent infections in the vaginal area.

Surgical operation is done to repair the fistula.

Can tiny air bubbles be considered as air/gas coming out? No noise, haven’t noticed a smell. They actually don’t feel like coming from within, more like they are formed at the vaginal opening. It’s a weird feeling, but don’t know whether I should be worried.

    I am 3 months post-partum, vaginal delivery.

That’s vaginal gas. Nothing to be concerned about.

As your pelvic musculature regains its strength with time, the problem would subside on its own.

Hello. I made a mistake in my question. I meant to say myomectomy. I had the surgery last year August, and though I can’t exactly say when it started but recently I have been passing wind through my vagina but with no odour. Could it be a symptom of a fistula. Thanks once again.

      Unlikely.

It’s common to get it after such surgical procedures, where your pelvic musculature is disturbed.

As your pelvic musculature strengthens up again, the problem would subside.

Do Kegel’s exercises daily to help healing fast.

I seem to have vaginal gas, I am 60 yrs old. When it happens I am laying in bed.dosing off. Bit it feels almost like a shock of electricity when it happens. As it expels, the feeling is like electricity is on my vagina. Is this something that could be other thing besides just the gas.

Hello, thanks for replying, there is no fecal matter or discharge (i do have white mucus discharge from vagina but not particularly while passing gas) but for last 3 4 days i am noticing the same happening more often sometimes standing and sitting also, what could it be, i am worried. Can the trapped vaginal gas expel while passing gas from rectum also??

        1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Typically, it expels out when you squat, strain or keep your legs wide apart. It may expel out with rectal gas also. If overweight, reducing weight helps in such cases.

Hi. Since having my third baby via vaginal birth 3 years ago , I noticed that whenever I pass wind from my rectum, some of it gets trapped in my vagina. It happens especially when I pass wind lying down, and the vaginal wind comes out like a fart when I’m uptight or when I sit. I’ve not noticed any smell from the vaginal wind but probably haven’t paid attention (as it is essentially the same rectal wind), also no unusual discharge or smell. I keep worrying that this may be a small fistula especially because the wind gets trapped mainly in the lying position.

Any discharge from the vagina? If not, it’s unlikely to be a fistula.

This is normal, after having 3 kids from the vaginal canal. Your vaginal canal has got stretched and lost its original muscle tone. Try during Kegels exercises on a daily basis to increase the muscle tone of your pelvic musculature.

If over weight, try losing weight.

That’s normal. Appears to be healing.

You need to start doing Kegel’s exercises on a daily basis. Avoid getting constipated. If required, stool softeners may be used.

My wife is 4 month post partum now. She had a broken stitch after about two weeks which was corrected by the doctor. But from about three weeks after delivery till now she has been passing anal flatus that comes with an embarrassing sound and is very offensive in smell. We have tried monitoring what she eats and excluding anyone we suspect but nothing has changed! Just some days ago she said the fart passes from the anus and vagina at the same time. What could be wrong with her system please? It smells sometimes like a decaying matter. Please what is the solution? Thank you.

This is normal. Surgical injuries dawn there may take months to heal. Just ask her to take care of hygiene down there. Let her monitor her diet strictly. Limit to all sugary food stuff.

She may start practicing Kegel’s exercises for quicker healing.

I had surgery for repair of rectovaginal fistula 12 days after vaginal birth.it got infected but got healed with antibiotic. No stool in vagina but I can feel gas from vagina from time time. Gas is odorlesss and no sound. Sometimes feels like bubbles but sometimes just normal gas. Could it still be fistula?

      Unlikely.

You need to give it time to heal. Avoid being constipated at any cost. You may need to take dietary fibers for this. You may also start doing Kegels exercises as early as possible. Consult your doctor about when to start. This would strengthen the overall pelvic musculature and make a difference.

Thank you. My doctor is on vacation now. The repair was 11weeks ago. It got healed from infection for only 8.weeks now. So can I do the kegel exercises now? I can feel slight pain from my vagina but seldom..By the way, i can feel more air now than it was after it got healed from infection. What could this be?

Yes, you may start with Kegels now.

It just appears to be your extremely stretched vaginal wall. It may take time for it to regain its original status.

Hi I had a vaginal delivery 2 months ago and since last few weeks I have been passing gas from my anus and vagina. I did have a 3rd degree tear. At times it will be from my vagina and at times through my anus. It doesn’t matter what position I am in. It does stink and I notice some yellow discharge. I’m not itchy. But I notice I’m still little sore around vagina like when peeing or sitting in squat position. No fecal matter coming from vagina but smelly farts. Do you think it’s a fistula?

    1. Buddy M.D. Post author

Unlikely to be a fistula. However, it’s better to get it examined by your doctor to be sure.

These are common symptoms after having a 3rd degree tear in the vaginal wall. Would take a few months to get alright.

You need to avoid being constipated at any cost. Lose weight, if over weight.

Start with Kegels exercises at the earliest. You may practice it 5 to 6 times a day for good results.

Hi got healed from rectovaginal repair 2 1/2 months ago after vaginal delivery. Some air passing through my vagina that feels like bubble but sometimes feels like with slight pressure, but no foul smell when I fart through vagina. Vaginal discharge does not smell bad white to yellowish color. However,my underwear smells different from normal smell a used panty should be. It does not smell fishy. Its somewhat fruity or like body odor which seems to be in the position of my urinary meatus. What could this be? I got testedfrom UTI but negative.

Everything appears normal. Just check for any redness or itching down there. If not, there’s no infection.

It’s common for the vaginal wall to be over stretched and laxed after strenuous vaginal delivery. It would take time for the muscles of the vaginal canal to regain their tone. Til then, you may experience these symptoms.

However, some corrective steps do help. Try Kegels exercises 3 to 4 times daily. Also, reduce weight, in case you’re over weight.

Your fistula is not completely healed yet, that’s it. It doesn’t appear infected.

Avoid being constipated. Avoid lifting heavy weight and other strenuous exercises.

Common after such procedures. Your fistula repair would take time to heal, around a year. Till then, avoid straining at stool. Watch your diet. Better eat wholesome grains, fruits and veggies to keep you away from constipation and excess gas.

Avoid lifting heavy weight or other strenuous exercises.

You may also start Kegels exercises, without straining yourself. This would strengthen your pelvic muscles and gradually alleviate symptoms.

I pass gas from my vaginal opening very frequently.
Almost as if I am not able to pass it from behind it comes out from my vagina. Travelling all the way from back to front.
Sometimes both happens at the same time. I am sexually active but have had no kids.
Had some vaginal infections but they have healed through antibiotics and care.
There is no fecal matter as far as I have noticed.
    Can it be serious?
Or Can it be a fistula?
