Sweet Smell From Nasal Secretions

Q: Hi there, I had posted a question yesterday about my mother’s sneeze. You gave an answer and asked me to clarify some things to you. Here are the explanations:

  1. She does not smoke or drink alcohol.
  2. As for diet, there is nothing she consumes which I or the rest of my family do not consume. And none of us apart from her have smelly sneezes.
  3. She does not have diabetes, kidney, liver and sinus problems. It was proven through tests.
  4. She is otherwise healthy.

So keeping in mind the above information, please offer advice.
Thanks.

It’s a common medical saying “Common things are common”. In plain language, one should look for common causes of illness rather than rare ones. If nothing is found, then look harder. Here are some common causes of sweet-smelling nasal mucus.

In your mother’s case, although you have mentioned that she doesn’t have a sinus problem, it would be better to get her rechecked preferably by an ENT specialist.

You may also get some blood tests including blood sugar, liver and kidney function tests.

Take care,

What is the main cause of the constant thick, salty phlegm that I always taste whenever I snort out phlegm/mucous from my nose. It’s always clear, thick and salty. How can I fix it? Please help.

Commonest causes are having congested sinuses or some chronic allergic condition in the nose. You may see an ENT specialist for evaluation.

May be due to medicines and anesthesia used during the procedure. Would subside with time.
