Management of Piles

Q: I am 25 years old male. I have redness and pain around my anus that I think might be piles. I applied mustard oil regularly for five days and pain was all gone. But now after 2 months, the pain has come back again. I feel pain while sitting and going to toilet. Is it piles? Please suggest what should I do? Also suggest home remedies for the same.

This doesn’t sound like piles.

Piles is a condition where there is inflammation of the blood vessels surrounding the anal canal. The commonest symptom patients come with is blood coming out with stools. Since, you have not observed any blood with stools, this is unlikely to be piles.

Pain and redness around the anus can be due to any of the following reasons:
  1. Irregular bowel movements: Diarrhea or constipation. This lead to strain down there.
  2. Taking too much of spicy food. Try cutting down on spices, especially chili. Such food are known to cause irritation around the anus.
  3. Dry skin around the anal opening- This could have been caused by frequent washing or wiping. Try applying some lubricant over the skin there.
  4. Inadequate fiber intake- It is very important to take fibers in your diet. This is required for the whole gastrointestinal tube, including the terminal part. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Also, avoid fatty stuff and junk food.
  5. Obesity- Being overweight can lead to irritation over the skin around the anus.

Management

  • Avoid being constipated. Hard stools can be one of the factors leading to irritation.
  • Drink lots of water and avoid spices for some time.
  • Apply some lubricant (or oil, as you did before) over the skin down there.
  • Include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet.
  • If overweight, try reducing weight.
  • If possible, avoid long sitting hours.

Ya, there is regular bowel movement, no constipation. I got the appointment with family doctor. He gave me some medicine but a quiet relief from pain and there is little bit redness over anal opening.

Having regular bowel movements is essential. It’s good you have no problem with your stools.

You may continue with the medications your doctor has given.

Also, try changing your wipes to a softer hypoallergen variety.

Avoid too much of spices in your meals. Avoid alcohol for some time and limit your intake of tea and coffee. All these factors contribute to such problems.

And also there is swelling over the heart? Is there any relation between ITP and heart swelling. Please reply.

      Hemorrhoids are usually managed surgically.

Keeping your blood pressure in check and having a healthy diet, rich in fibers, prevents their occurrence.

The first thing to do is to soften your stools. Start taking a stool softener on a regular basis.

You may use one teaspoon of mineral oil in warm milk, to be taken before bedtime.

Or, you may buy some insoluble dietary fibers from the market. Have two teaspoon full of this powder in warm milk before bedtime.
