Infection in Ovarian Cyst May Get Complicated

Q. I am 31 years old and I have two children. Recently I was diagnosed with ovarian cyst measuring 6.25 cm. My obstetrician told me that it’s a septic cyst that needs to be removed urgently. Please advice.

It looks like that your ovarian cyst has got infected. You should get it checked urgently by an experienced gynecologist, who may assess it for surgical removal at the earliest.

There are certain dangers of such an infection in large cyst. It may get burst thereby spreading the sepsis. It may also spread to the abdominal cavity leading to peritonitis or adhesions.

Larger cysts are also prone to twisting or torsion, which is quite painful and risky condition. Sometimes hemorrhage also may complicate such cysts.

Considering the possibilities of all these complications especially rupture and spread of sepsis, an infected cyst especially the one that is large in size should be assessed for  the removal at the earliest.
