Simple Methods to Remove Bad Vaginal Smell

Q: I’m 16 years old, my vagina smells disgusting. It’s so embarrassing everyone can smell it. It’s so itchy and I wash myself everyday and I make sure that I’m clean. I just don’t get it. Please help me in total privacy, I don’t want anyone to know about it. I want home treatments that I can find. I think I have a BV (bacterial vaginosis).

If you have any discharge from your vagina, like white, green, clear or curdy, then the infections such as yeast infection, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis need to be ruled out. If not, then we have to think the problem differently.

Disturbance of Vaginal pH

While poor hygiene may lead to infections, excessive washing can also be dangerous.

The vagina of girls has a protective acidic pH. This is mainly maintained by lactobacilli, a bacteria which stays there in a natural way.

This pH does not let any fungus (yeast) or other pathogenic bacteria to grow in the vagina.

Excessive washing of the region washes away this natural bacteria and disturbs the pH there. This makes the region prone to growths of fungi and other pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria.

Other Causes That Disturb the Vaginal pH:

  • Taking a lot of antibiotics.
  • Using excess of douches and washes for vagina.
  • Using scented products on genital area.

To circumvent the problem, the pH of the region has to be maintained.

Self Care Tips to Remove Bad Genital Odor

You may follow these steps to achieve the goal:
  1. Don’t wash your vagina so much. Washing it twice daily with clear water would be enough.
  2. Never use any soap or shampoo over this region. They are not required.
  3. Avoid using any perfumed product like deodorant or sprays for your genitalia.
  4. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. These are very effective in restoring back the vaginal pH.
  5. Eat yogurt daily. It has the required bacilli which maintains the vaginal pH.
  6. Wear loose cotton under wears, at least when at home.
  7. Avoid eating too much of sugary stuff or carbohydrate diet.

Once you lose weight, stretch marks would start fading off in a natural ones to some extent. All you need to do is keep the skin area well lubricated. Bio oil or coconut butter may be used.

Stretch marks may not go away completely.

It is good you consulted the doctor who has given her those pills. Most of the prevention pills are not harmful.

Nothing much can be done now. They pills will slowly get excreted out of the body. Make her drink plenty of water to help in speedy excretion.

Make sure that her diapers are changed frequently. Wash the area daily with plain water, just wiping away is not sufficient after she poops.

A slight smell is common. However, if you feel the smell is strong, it is advisable to tell her doctor about it.

Just like grown ups, little girls may also get infections in their vagina.

My 9 year old has a very bad vaginal smell. We’ve been to the GP who gave us antibiotics to take for a week, during which time the smell reduced. It is now back again even though she eats her yogurt twice a day, she uses wet wipes to clean up after a visit to the toilet, she takes a bath twice a day. Please help.

Management would depend upon the cause of this foul smell.

Does she have any redness or swelling around her vaginal opening? Any evidence of itching in the area?

Commonly, such smells are either due to bacterial infections or some fungal growth. Read more on the causes of foul smelling vagina. Medicines cannot be prescribed unless one is clear about the cause.

It is quite possible that she had a bacterial infection for which she received treatment. This has been followed by a fungal infection. Fungal growths commonly occur after antibiotic courses and after excessive washing of the vaginal area.

The vaginal region harbors a few friendly bacteria, which stay there in a harmless way and keep away harmful bugs and fungus from growing there.

Any disturbance in the vaginal pH can harm these good bacteria, rendering it vulnerable to the growth of other harmful bugs.

To restore back the natural vaginal pH, you may do the following:

    2. Stop using alcohol wipes for cleaning. After she poops, it is better to wash down there with a stream of clear water. Encourage her to wash there thoroughly with plenty of water, then clean her hands properly.

Ask your doctor about taking a probiotic supplement (like culturelle or any other).

    3. If she doesn’t have any other symptom, like itching or redness, just do the above. She is likely to improve within 10 to 15 days. Read more.

Is the region red or swollen? If yes, it is likely to be a mild fungal infection. It is suggested that you see your pediatrician for diagnosis. Antifungal creams need to be used to eradicate the infection.

If the area is not red, no swelling, may be dryness is causing her to itch repeatedly. In such cases, any soft emollient may be applied on the area for relief.

Too much washing of the genital region may sometimes make it dry. Read more on washing the vaginal area.

What are her symptoms, do they itch, pain or burn? How many are they and where? Do they ooze out any fluid, any discharge from vagina? Are they like rashes or bumps? Does your daughter wear diapers or pads?
