Cyst in Left Adnexa

Q: I had just got a report that a cyst is present in the left adnexa. I also have a terrible pain in my back.

Back pain is very common with adnexal cysts. There can be many reasons for this. They are:
  • The cystic mass could be pressing against the nerves supplying the spine. The pressed nerves could be giving the pain.
  • This pain could be muscular in nature. The mass could be heavy enough to pull the back muscles.
You would require pain medications to alleviate the pain.

The treatment of the cystic mass would depend upon the size of the mass and its nature. It is advisable to go ahead with the treatment at the earliest.

I am 21 years old female. I have 2 daughters. I was suffering from low back pain, free fluids, heavy bleedings, abdominal pain since last year. When I visited the gynecologist she gave me an ultrasound and also did the tests of blood urine and biopsy. The report showed that I have infection PID and I have also 4cm cyst in my right ovary. Then the doctor only give to me 2 vaginal tablets and advised me to visit me in your last day of finishing period. When I visited, she did vaginal ultrasound but this time ultra sound didn’t show my cyst. The doctor said you don’t need any more medication. I was happy that the cyst had gone away by itself. But one night I had very terrible abdominal pain when I did another ultra sound. This time, it showed that I have 4.5cm cyst in my left ovary and the doctor prescribed the o.c pills for two months. Now I am so scared of that cyst. Do I need a surgery or should I continue taking o.c pills because I feel so weak and tired and fell fever all the day time.

See, it is very common to get small cysts in the ovary in these years of life. Why they occur is not properly known, however, it is postulated that hormonal disturbances are associated with their formation.

Disturbances in hormonal levels may be due to stress at home, emotional problems or due to certain medications.

Your doctor has rightly prescribed you O.C. These pills help maintaining the hormonal balance and constitute a standard treatment for cyst formation.

Surgery is not recommended at your age unless nothing else works.

AN INCIDENTAL NOTE WAS MADE THAT THEY FOUND A SEPTATED CYSTIC STRUCTURE WITHIN THE RIGHT ADNEXA WHICH IS LIKELY TO BE OVARIAN IN ORIGIN. COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THE ABOVE. MANY THANKS MRS SHARON WHITWORTH DOB 26/11/1968

Adnexa is the area lying just next to the uterus. There is a cystic structure lying in your right sided adnexa.

Are you having any menstrual problems?

Such cystic structures may arise from the ovary or the tube of that side. This cyst may be contributing to your backache/ back problems.

I am 30 years old female and have never conceived earlier. I have not got my period since last 2 months. My ultrasound report says “LEFT ADNEXA shows a well defined thin walled simple cystic lesion, measuring 31*30mm”. My pregnancy report is negative and I was asked to take a course of MEPRATE tablet for 5 days to get my periods. But that did not help. Could you please explain what could be the cause of this and what should I do next?

This looks like you’re having some hormonal problem.

When hormonal levels in a women get disturbed, due to stress, infection or any other systemic disease, adnexal cysts may get formed.

You need to see a gyne. Hormonal treatment may be given for some time.

Pains are likely to be due to nerves being compressed by inflammation in your back. Inflammatory process in the back need to be controlled. Needs to be an orthopedician at the earliest.
