Abdominal Cramping and Bloating

Malabsorption Syndrome

Malabsorption syndrome is a group of disorders characterized by poor absorption of food by the intestines. This leads to bloating due to inadequate digestion along with abdominal discomfort and cramping.

Malabsorption is confirmed by specialized chemical tests like D-xylose test, glycocholic breath test, triolein breath test, bentiromide and secretin tests.

Giardiasis is a parasitic disorder that leads to bloating, cramping and diarrhea. Antimicrobials such as flagyl are usually given for giardiasis after a lab examination of stools for parasites.

Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a similar condition. It is a pretty common disorder, which is usually diagnosed after ruling out other possibilities. Abdominal bloating and cramping are frequently seen. The cause of IBS is still elusive but has some relation to stress. Treatment includes avoidance of stress, intake of dietary fibers like metamucil, loperamide and dicyclomine.

Bloating is also seen with after taking certain food products that are difficult to digest. It may also be seen with incomplete digestion of food due to enzyme deficiencies. For instance, some people are unable to digest dairy products due to the deficiency of an enzyme called lactase. This may cause abdominal discomfort, bloating and cramping.

For all abdominal problems, avoiding certain foods such as dairy products, fried stuff, beans, soda etc. can be helpful. Over-the-counter antacids can be taken. Take plenty of water and fluids. Daily exercise and mobility also helps in bowel functioning. If these measures fail to help, then you may have to get various diagnostic tests to rule out other causes.
