Side Effects of Tranquilizers

Some of our symptoms may actually be the side effects of certain medications. For example, tranquilizers, when taken for a long time, usually give some side effects. Muscle spasms, tremors, stiffness are some of them.

Some of these medications have a tendency to cause an increase in the body temperature. If unchecked, it may cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a potentially life threatening condition. So, if you feel hot or abnormally sweaty anytime, it’s a good idea to take your temperature. If your temperature goes up (as measured with thermometer), you should report to the doctor ASAP. Although, this problem is seen less often these days with newer drugs.

Cogentin is an anticholinergic medication that may counter some of these side effects including spasms. But it may help only to a certain extent.
