Difficult Cycles After the Tubes Tied

Q: I am 25 years old and have 4 children. I had my tubes tied in 2010 and have had a regular 4-5 days heavy period since then. On Saturday I woke up at 7 am and had a little blood, and bled very light until Sunday night when the bleeding stopped completely. I went to the gyne doctor to make sure everything is OK and he sent me for blood tests. Then he told me to come back in 2 weeks. I was wondering what could be the cause. I don’t want to worry but I want to be prepared for what may be happening. Thank you.

Menstrual problems are not uncommon in women with tubal ligations. One reason why such problems occur is that the blood supply to the ovaries may get disturbed during ligation operations.

The blood vessels supplying the ovaries may get nicked or obliterated altogether.

Hence, the ovaries do not function optimally. This may lead to hormonal fluctuations.

Perhaps your doctor wants to check your hormonal levels. He may also be checking your thyroid status, as the thyroid gland is another factor to be evaluated whenever any such hormonal disturbance is suspected.

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome / Tubal Sterilization Syndrome

In few women, a condition called post tubal ligation syndrome occurs. This condition is characterized by ovarian isolation altogether. There are severe hormonal imbalances with symptoms similar to premenstrual syndrome. Tubal sterilization syndrome is managed with supportive measures.

You just require an evaluation for your gyne problem. Let your doctor discuss the problem with you.
