Dealing With Wound After Surgical Drainage

Q: I’m a 30 years old woman and had an infected sebaceous cyst drained yesterday by a doctor. He said he couldn’t feel anything else and put a bandage on it. It immediately felt better and I started my course of antibiotics. This morning when I went to change the bandage, I could see inside the hole he made. There was more gunk in there and it’s starting to feel sore again. Can I drain it at home? Do I need to go back to the doctor?

It is not advisable to drain it at home.

It is more likely to be the wound material caused by surgery, than the leftover cyst material. You may continue with your antibiotic medications and wait for the wound to dry up.

If, at any point, you still feel this is left over cyst material, go to your doctor. Don’t try draining it at home.
